The 3rd party brands are compatible as long as they are Nikon mount, just whether you prefer manual or TTL flash.

Ha! I usually don't encourage the use of such converters, but hey, the only 24mm f/1.4 lens that I know costs a bomb!

The closest thing we have to that us probably the Sigma 24mm f/1.8 EX DG APO Macro, and it isn't that great or cheap either!

Hello all D5100 kakis, did you all tried rear curtain sync flash on D5100? I read from many place rear curtain sync is flash before second curtain closed, but my camera flash 1 time when first curtain open and flash another time before second curtain close. Is that normal or my set got problem? thanks.

hehe..thxs for ur post bro. after reading ur post, i start to look up on the rear curtain thingy and now i know what's the use for it n how n when to use it. i read the yanik's photo school write up about the rear curtain and he swears by it. any one thinks pro or oppose it?

Bro, did you test on your set? Configure the shutter speed to 1 second and flash mode to rear curtain sync, please let me know if you see 2 flash at start and end or only 1 flash light before second curtain close. Thanks..

I'm not sure if the first flash is for TTL metering purpose, because in fill light mode actually it flash 2 times also. But the period between both flash light are too close (2ms) so we never notice. First flash camera will metering for correct exposure, then adjust the flash power and second flash for real shooting..

ok, i will try it but u r talking with the built-in flash or external mounted flash?

Think your setting is red eye reduction. Or maybe red eye reduction with rear curtain syn.

For what i know about rear curtain syn, your camera shutter is turn on first and then your flash comes in after some delay.

I used rear curtain flash syn for all my birding shots. It is good as it actually properly expose your background and your subject nicely.

My rear curtain flash only flash once.... erh.. i used it with SB800....

Bro Konspire, both flashe light give me same respond.

Bro Reno, I will double check after work. But I think I have set it correctly, that's why I feel strange also. It should only flash once before second shutter close.

If you really want to go cheap, use yongnuo manual flash and learn it the hard way. You will learn much more in the long run. iTTL is convenient, but it's like aperture priority, you might lose control if you dunno what u are doing.

Rave reviews for Nissin Di622 mark ii on build quality and the range is also much better than sb700. Take a look at that. Although for me, i think that build in flash is enough for me probably too lazy to also charge batteries for flash. Hehe. Price is also much cheaper at around 200+.

If you only refer to the raw power of the flash yes. But there's so many missing features!

- Manual Zoom head
- Range of zoom head
- CLS Master
- Multiple channel remote
- Wider flash power control range
- Flash recycle time
- Overall User-interface
- High speed sync
- More channels available for CLS

If I have a SB-700, I might consider adding a Nissin as an additional light source. If I haven't, SB-700 is the obvious choice. To me the features above are worth the extra $200 spent. Though if I got the dough, I would still want a SB-910 to add to my current setup.
