Hi Guys,

I'm a total noob to the DSLR world, so please help me out.

I'm about to get my first DSLR in the D5100 from Alan Photo tomorrow.
The deal they are offering is 1029 for the 5100 body + kit, with tripod, 8GB memory card, card reader and remote control. Would this be a good deal, or are there better deals out there?

1. What is the need for a UV filter and a dry cabinet ? How much should I be paying for a screen protector as well.
2. When I went down to Alan Photo today, they were recommending me to get a macro+wide angle lens for 299, I'm not quite sure of the exact specifications, but the effects of the lens was amazing. Together with the above, they were willing to offer me 1300 for everything.

I'm also worried that the macro+wide angle lens for 299 may be too expensive, as i've no idea of how much the market price is, or whether i even need it in the first place.

Kindly advise. Thank you.

Hahahaha.....correct on this one....

Here's another question, to edit the pictures, say for example with photoshop or the default nikon software, do we capture photos in raw or jpeg.

And can hdr function be selected if we shoot in raw.

Thxs.....

You can do it in both raw or Jpeg. The difference is raw file has all (most of the time) data retained while jpeg is a stripped off, compressed file. The difference? While raw files will definitely takes up more disk space, it's more tolerant to adjustments than jpeg files. For e.g., you will start to see bad effects when you attempt to adjust the exposure of a picture for more than 1 stop on a Jpeg as compare to a raw file.

Just to clarify, I'm a person who don't believe in adding glass in front of my lens if there were no value to the picture I want to achieve. UV filters, to me, has no value, and I would spend the same money to buy lens tissue or microfiber cloth if there's a need to wipe.Just think, if I have to spend so much in order not to have the filter to introduce any image degradation, why wouldn't it be better off not spending it in the first place. As for protection, you will be surprise how filters get stuck to the filter thread more often than protecting a fallen lens. It's a matter of how careful a user you are.

My last filter is a 67mm B+W MRC, which I'm still regretting why did I spend 40+ on it, it has nvr left my filter pouch since I realize the above...

Reasonable for your take to filter since the fact that the filter does not enhance the iq in normal situation.
Perhaps I am a rough user and would prefer a protection filter to be on to protect 2-3k lens from scratch, finger print, rain drop which after wiping may affect the lens nano or whatever coating in long term. I bring my camera around when travel and shoot in all sort of condition, rain or shine. Besides protection, other filter such as ND allow me to take great landscape shots.

I realized that 5100 jpeg produce brighter and more vibrant than raw without editing. If you are lazy person and do not intend to use lightroom, aperture to adjust. shooting in jpeg will be good.

All my tours photo and candid are taken in jpeg. Love the colors... Hahaha

I've got uv filters on my lenses as well. Main reason is to protect the lens too. My daughter likes to touch the lens, thus I'm super worried. Haha.

But good thing for me, filters have saved my lenses twice now (in 10 mths). Once is from dust n grime (this is not serious, I know), 2nd time from a scratch that went across the filter top down. I've yet to find out how I got the scratch but I'm really glad the filter was there. If no,t I'll have a damaged front element now...

Of cos... It processed for you. However, you have much less control over the image without introducing artifacts and degradation to your image. Just think of it as comparing taking instant pix to digital camera. Instant pix give you the result immediately, much much faster than any digital camera. But you can't do much there after short of scanning back as a digital image.

This is my D5100 with 14-24mm, making it a good general lens with 1.5x crop.

pretty happy with the purchase.

How much and where did you buy your D5100 for ?

Any accessories with it ?

Also, i wanted to ask if there is a need for a macro + wide angle lens ( 2in1) - the guy at Alan Photo was quoting me 290 for this.!!!

You do not need the 2in1 lens. It is useless....

Don't get it, it's not worth the money. Top up another 300 and you can get a good quality wide angle or macro lens. Also, the actual price of that converter is a lot less than what is quoted to you

does the d5100 have the function to check the iso of photos taken with auto-iso? i've been exploring around but cant seems to find them.
