Currently i am headache of which one to buy? I having a buget around 1.8K to 2K.... and could you all mind giving some comment on which one is better to purchase? As i am going to buy within this weekend... thank......

Hi all and kokb3ng, total newbie (CS and DSLR) here - with an alternative view.

The wife was complaining about our P&S (Canon Ixus 850) last month. Wonderful images in good light, but just can't keep up with our 2yr daughter. And crappy shots with the built-in flash.

The D5000 came out (and Canon 500D). Read several reviews, forums, spoke to friends, etc. Was seriously leaning towards the D90, for all the reasons listed by the posters in this thread and similar ones. And I had set myself a budget of 2K.

Guess what?

I bought a D40 ! From Carrefour !! For SGD 799, with the 18-55 (non-VR) kit lens, and 55-200 VR !!!

Promptly bought a 35 mm f/1.8G AF-S lens, an SB-400 flash, and Hoya filters for all the lenses.

For a grand total of SGD 1400, we're covered from wide-angle to tele to low-light/shallow DOF to bounce flash.

Just need to get an ultra-wide lens to complete the team, but I'm baulking at the 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G DX (it's highly rated but gonna cost more than my total outlay so far). Maybe the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 ...

So far the wife is happy (image quality :) and didn't bust the budget :D ).

And the daughter's looking good too http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ddskpAr0PYY/SjNj7b61arI/AAAAAAAAB_E/k0RgJB9KHBE/s1600/DSC_0461.JPG

Of course, if you have a 3K budget, that's a different story ;)

Hey bro,

Congrats!!!! Mind sharing how much the 2nd hand D90 cost you and what the package was? I am ok to get a 2nd hand one too, and I'm scouting. Hope to get a good deal soon! ;) Happy snapping to you and your wife!!!! Share some pics when you can ok? :)

Bro, I did not buy a 2nd HAND D90. I bought my 2nd set of BRAND NEW D90.;)
HAHA.... dun intend to give up my D90 as yet. but I wonder why anyone will let go of their D90 since its already such a good camera.

I suggest you to invest in a new D90. at least you will not doubt its history etc.

D90 for sure. No horse run. Just got my D90 this Tuesday. No stock in Singapore. Better buy D90, when you buy D5000, people will ask you why not you buy D90. After you buy D90 nobody will ask you..

This is the funniest logic I have read. :sweatsm::sweatsm::sweatsm:

in your condition, i will prefer to get D90 body then I will pair it with tamron 17-50 f/2.8, that should be around 2k (if am not wrong). then if you want to put some more money to burn, u can get 2nd hand of 50mm f/1.8 as your prime.

Hmm... i would say try out both cameras. Challenger at Funan should be able to try both. (Thats wat i did, tried the grip on both at there) The grip and the weight. Most important is your feel on the camera. Nxt work within ur budget, if i'm not wrg its ard $500 diff of both models kit set. For me, i have a pair of big hands and with quite a big thumb. The weight feel good in my hands thus D90 was my choice.

But i didn't get my set at challenger. Their price too exp liao =).

NineStar, where did u get? and how much? :)

I've just got my D90, after much reading of any reviews I could find ;)

For me the deciding factors are: In-body focus motor, Flash commander, Pentaprism glass viewfinder. And the grip fits my hand best

Something to note is that Nikon has a promotion of D90 with 18-55 lens now, but I feel the original kit lens of 18-105 is much better as a default walk-around lens, a bit more zoom and flexibility.

I also notice I can do manual focus (override) after the initial auto focus with the shuttle half-pressed (holding), not sure if other lens can do that? (using AF-S)

Many lenses can.17-55,24-70 these are the few i used b4 that can override

Why not buy D300 or D700 or D3? :bsmilie:

Just went to sim lim with a friend and bought the D90 body for $1330.. yes u heard me.. only BODY!! no tripod, no extra batt, no lens, no camera bag!! With a 2K buget u r squeezing pretty hard.. Actually we got a nikon AF-s macro 105mm VR for another 1.3K!! then an extra longer life batt for 145. another 50 for a small cam bag, 600+ for a SB900 flash.. my goodness.. photography is an expensive hobby!! but then, u dont have to get the 105mm lens lah.. D90 does come with kit too.. about 1.6K I think..
D5000 to me is just a D60 with live view.. live view tech sucks at the moment.. Buy a D90.. eat bread for a month, then buy more accessories and lens and eat more bread.. :) haha.. helps to lose weight u know..

beg to differ with weychuan that the 18-105 is better

it may be a little more convenient

but to me, gosh, the 18-55 is an uber lens for it's price

D90 Is satisfying ...Can conside D300 or D3 as mentioned.. if you got more $$$. I would like to but my skill can't make it..

Frankly speaking, Considering D5000 or D90, actually Canon 500D also comes into picture..

D5000 + Few hundred = Canon 500D
Canon 500D + Few hundred = D90
D90 + Few hundred = Out of topics(with limited budget)

But D90 is comparable to 50D woh...

Buy D90 + 18-105mm (around 1.7) then take a rest for a while eat some bread.(NTUC homebrand is cheaper). Then save some money buy SB800/SB600.

You can buy D5000.. but not enough SOLID.. bueh SONG holding D5000 compare to D90.

Of course more $$$ more SONG lah..

Hi all,

Am a new owner (aye 2wks still new right hahaha) of D90 :D, I think a lot of CSer have made a lot of relevent comments all definitely important points to consider in the selection criteria.

1 point i would like to raise is what is the purpose of upgrading from a P&S to a DSLR? Is it just for percieved better quality or for the furthering of photographic skill and interest. I feel this is an important point to consider. D5000 and D90 are both good cameras but i think D5000 can give instant gratification with regards to picture quality with its multiple modes and pre-settings. For D90, it would require mastering (auto mode is good too but not as comprehensive as D5000's) before you can achieve the quality of pictures we so often see being posted up here. I am trying hard to master it :D

So i think must consider the intention too. Just my 2 cents worth

cheers,
kilkenny

Given a choice, I'd go for a D90. The viewfinder experience and more direct access buttons is the clincher. Videos and live-view? I hope Nikon would take these out and make it cheaper (and I'm not going to compare it with D80 and D60 respectively).

Does Nikkor 50mm f1.8 auto focus on a D90?? just curious.
