hey, i am a new owner for D40X for 2 days already, i have no DSLR experience prior to this. I am using the kit lens and pretty satisfied with it indoors. but outdoors will a 8-200 (or any f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens) be good??

i intend to do street and wildlife photography :D insects too !!

Forgive me if this sounds silly. I have no previous experience with a dSLR (currently using Fujifilm F31fd compact) and I am planning to buy the D40X and the AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6G DX VR IF-ED lens with Nikon SB-400 flash. Would this combo be good enough to shoot indoor of kids? Of course there are better lenses, cameras, etc... but like most things, it all boils down to how much we are willing to or able to spend. Cheers!

indoors, i would recommend shooting with the 18-55 kit lens + Sb400 flash with ceiling bounce. the wide angle and close focus will come in very handy for shooting kids.

the kit lens would be good for street photography outdoors. for wildlife, you would want a longer lens, say up to 300mm focal length. for insects, consider buying a dedicated macro lens like the 105mm VR macro. as a compromise, the 18-200 would be excellent for street, quite good for wildlife, but not good enough for insects (macro).

A large aperture prime, such as 50mm f/1.8. The problem is that D40x has no screw-slot AF drive, and so, you'll have to perform manual focusing with all primes; I believe the only exception right now is the Sigma 30mm f/1.4, as it has HSM (their version of SWM).

i am using the sigma 30/1.4 on my d40 and can recommend it highly. excellent for available light photography.

Hi! I'm a real starter to this. Like mickie, it's frustrating. They tempt you with that seemingly small improvement but yet it seems they make world of a difference! For real?

Any advise to this config as a start off? D40X + 18-200mm VR + SB600? Can I understand 18-200mm VR as a 1 size fits all? I will mostly take my kids, mostly indoor, animals (again for my kids) and maybe scenery when I go on business trips.

Also, what to look for in tripod? Thanks!

d40x + 18-200 + SB600 is a very good combo, will suit 90% of your shooting needs IMHO.

look for sturdiness, ease of use, size, weight and carrying capacity in a tripod.

thanks.. btw, wad is the difference of the A and S mode on the camera i know A is aperture and S is for shuttle. but in what way do i use which settings?

S is for Shutter Priority. A is for Aperture Priority. Basically, it means that you would like to predefine the shutter speed (S) or aperture (A) to use and let the camera decide on the other based on the metering of the scene. In Program (P) mode, the camera decides both.

any of u guys have any idea, when will the battery grip for d40/d40x be release? or will there be a battery grip for d40/d40x users..?

Not that I know of. Probably it will defeat its purpose of being a small dSLR. Besides, the battery life is pretty good!
