i finally bought my D80 kit yesterday at the camera workshop at Peninsula Shopping Centre 1700 in cash. NO free gifts. Wonder is it expensive ??? as it is my first time buying such a expensive thing in my life, no experience. I did walk ard comparing all the prices, they offered me 1.8 above after gst and service charge for nets.

When i tell my friend, they scolded me for being implusive and say why i spended 1.7 k on a camera whereas i have no knowledge in it. I scared it will become a white elephant. I dare not even tell my mum about it.

No choice for the time being, i have to read thru the menu and experiment the camera,

Now what my concern is the warranty, What m i supposed to do ah, they tell me can bring in to their shop for servicing, within the year. I wana to send my warranty to nikon service centre, but nt sure what is the thing that i shoould send in.

And lastly,, i wana to take care of my camera, but hw to take care. I don;t want to buy a dry box as it will need electricity to operate it, I need something that is small portable, to store just the camera and the lenses.

Meanwhile i wonder is it possible just to keep the camera inside the box and put inside the ziplock bag and put inside my cupboard.

Yes. Grey=water. And yes, Camera Workshop (TCW) is well known to bring in grey sets, so you'd better ask them when you buy. If anything wrong within first year just bring to them. Anything after first year, whether grey or not still need to pay at NSC. Nikon products won't spoil that easily one. I have so many Nikon product which I didn't even bother to fill in the warranty. Anything wrong, just bring the receipt and warranty down to NSC.

Since you already bought it, don't worry that much and make the best use of it.

So Lawrence, you did an impulse purchase? Take this as a Lesson #1 - Always be sure what you are buying and how it will serve you. But rest assured, Nikons are made to last, and the D80s are more for amatuer-to-experienced users, so it should last you for a while! Don't let this be your main concern.

Yes, you've got to have your cover blown, cos you'll need a dry box. Maybe not those big digi-Cabs but at least a small one to make your investment lasts. Tell your mum about it! Tell her you're digging this hobby and gonna take the best pics ever! Hey, it beats hanging around bad companies right?

Bought yesterday and regret today? Don't lah, take the chill pill and relax, there are more costly sets in the market... and thank God they didn't sold you the D200 or D2xs for that matter! And don't kill yourself over this, but make this most-expensive purchase your best one ever.

Take it out, sling it over, bring it on, and USE IT!

eh? how come u have Nikon Singapore warranty card for lens? humm... :think:

remove ur lens hood when using wide angle setting with pop up flash, the hood is casting a shadow.

If you bring back to the shop (not NSC), you are still covered within the first year.

d80 is a good camera. very handy in many situations. but i havent really gotten a dry box since the time i bought it.. haha.. too busy with school and stuff to think about buying it. yea dont shoot me. i'll get one soon when i get more lenses.

d80 is a good camera and yea nikon does make good quality and QC cameras. since you have your money spent already, why not make full use of it. use it frequently and you will improve quickly.

I sold my D80 w/Kit Lens and get a D40x w/18-200mm VR !! The D40x has less noise at high ISO compare to the D80

Sorry to dig up this thread again....I've spent the last 1 hr reading through... great thread...

I'm new here and am deciding for my first DSLR. I am using Panasonic Lumix prosumer now (for the past 3 yrs) and am thinking of upgrading. After reading all the pros and cons here and elsewhere, I think I'll probably settle for a D40 instead of a D40X / D80.

I mean, I only take pictures of my kids (5 yrs and 1 yr) and probably some landscape and architecture when we travel). I have never and don't think I ever will blow up my pictures beyond A4. Only did half an A4 (B4??) at most with pictures taken from the prosumer. Looks pretty good I think.

Another reason is the thought of carrying a D80 with whatever kind and number of lens around on weekends to botanic garden, sentosa etc seems like a chore to me. Not forgetting baby pram, milk powder, floor mat etc etc...

So a D40 with a 18-55 or at best 55-200 lens seems more palatable to me.

I was actually thinking of D40X until I read that it is discontinued from dpreview and the various unnecessaries that some forumers have pointed out. 10 mps?? No need lah. I used to take quite nice pictures (of my son) on holidays with a Made in Taiwan no brand 2 mps compact digital camera. Composition, feel and the point in time image are important factors too, in my view. If got good natural sunlight and backdrop for the outdoor, anything also can lah..

Last price check (with kit lens):
D40 - S$800 - S$900 :bsmilie:
D40X - S$1000 - S$1200
D80 - S$1600 - S$1700

Price-wise, I think D40 make my wife very happy too... :nono:

3 AF points only? No good meh? Many years ago before the come of digital age, I used a Nikon film SLR, only got 1 AF point also like that...and only 36 shots per roll.. so precious!!!

Whilst embracing latest technology is good... but depends on your needs really. I don't have a plasma or a HD TV and am still using a montrous CRT 29". Still can watch what...

if u are ok and happy to use just AF-S or HSM driven lenses, then by all means get the D40 or D40x. Tt's the main difference btw D40/x and D80.
with the budget u have, isnt it better if u can fish one 2nd hand D80 from the 2nd hand market? D40/x users pls dun flame me hor........

That's my line of thinking too.

If I'm getting D40 with kit lens 18-55mm, I'm also thinking of getting an extra zoom lens 55-200mm VR (read reviews that this is a cheap and good lens. is it true since you've got it too?).

What is the use of 50mm f/1.8 normal lens? Read that it can't be used together with D40 unless it is manual focus. I know that with this sort of lens, the photgrapher gotta move nearer or further from the object when taking pictures but what is the purpose of doing that? Can't a zoom lens do the trick? Is it because it has the ability to have a much wider aperture at 1.8 hence more light can enter the camera ie. for indoor shoots?? :dunno:
