I know the D80 specs. I took a very hard look at everything yesterday. D80 has more physical controls, Mirror lockup, and CLS control using built in flash.

But is it worth spending the extra dollars for it? Or is it more worth it to get the D200? If you want cheap, go D40. If you want something to boost your self esteem, get the D200. Why get the D80? I still cannot get the rationale behind this.. D80 is only a bit cheaper than D200 but D200 offers MUCH MUCH MUCH more than D80, so why chose something that hangs in the middle of nowhere?

I didn't say D80 is a bad camera. I am just saying it is not cost effective.

What if u have just enough cash to get the D80? And in order to get D200, u need to borrow cash for it? Also, D40 isn't big for ya hand on the griping and lesser function than wat u require? Also, can't wait for the price to drop later? No other brand that u want to get except Nikon?

camera weight
battery usage
noise control
easier to hand hold at lower shutter speeds
extra money to buy other stuff

according to the Nikon price list

Nikon D200 (body only) - ($2100~$2550) | $2120 (AP, Jun07 - soma) free 2GB CF cards | $2100 (Lord's, Jun07 - Override2Zion)
Nikon D80 (body only) - ($1380~$1550) | $1380 (Lord's, Jun07 - dizcat)

the difference in price can buy a SB800

I recommend D80. Good noise control is the main point :)

haha.. I kinda suspect D80 is out selling D40/x.. anyone have official figures?:)

Price dropped i think. Thought it was stuck at 1.8k

Find the D200 a system you are able to "grow into" and expand without the need for a new body, The D80 will reach a limit where you will have to buy a D200, D2xs, D2H to expand after a certain amount of time.

If you are talking on the basic level of flashguns, lenses, D80 prob can do it.

You want other brand then get other brand lah.. I nevr said anything about other brand :dunno: Olympus is cheap and good alternative.

How can you have "just enough cash" for D80? I think people should learn to excercise patience and save. Owell. Whatever lah.

What is the D80 lacking such that you dislike it?

sad to say i disagree with you on that
technology is changing at breakneck speed

and even with a D2Xs you will want to change another body when the technology changes

take for example the short time frame of the release of the D200 and the D80
noise control has improved
power usage has improved

the only thing the D200 has over the D80 is the weather sealing and the 5fps shooting

btw i was talking about a new SB800 and not a "basic level of flashguns"

aiya, he want to bash the D80 let him bash lor.. he just doesn't understand.. =)

that is because he has already bought a D40(X) and does not want to know

What's so bad about having a D40x?

Well one bad thing i cant mount other lens other than AF-S. Tho i still could but i would have to manually focus, which aint a bad thing if you wanna practice how to shoot with manual focus. But seriously, D40x is one of the best cameras for its range especially for newbies who are just starting DSLR. To me, i find it very paiseh if you have the best cameras, best prime lenses, best telephoto lenses, wadeva flashes but output, your photos still come out like ****.

Just my opinion.

i agree the D40X is a great camera for it's target market
if i have too much money i'd buy 1 just for travelling

Heck... I didn't say I dislike it.. after Ortega said it was 1.3K plus I was thinking of going down to town to see if I could get a set. Seems like everyone is out of stock.

I always thought it was 1.8k plus (I have no time to go shopping).

1.8K is the price I deemed not value for money. If it's 1.3k I think I really re-think verything all over again

I think you misunderstood me, I'm not bashing the D80. Never was.
Maybe from my posts you think I am bashing it, but FYI I didn't mean to. If I offended anyone who owns a D80, sorry.

Yes ortega, I agree. But D200 seems to quicker access to functions to me, though the battery life is terrible.

To me, there are two classes of Digital SLRs, the pro class and the consumer class. The D40(x), D80 belong in the consumer class, while the D200 and D2x(s) belong in the pro class. (The D2H(s), in my opinion, is in a market of its own). There are connectors the consumer class is unable to use, among other things. Differences are not very obvious when you pick up your camera the first time, but after a while you will start realising where its limitations are.

For most users, I hink they will not require the raw speed of the pro class, or the specialied connectors for shutter releases etc (Though I love the ML L3 infared remote ;p). The D80, will do for them.

But what if those consumers desire to have something more once they've reached the pinnacle of the D80's capabilities? They will have to buy a new body, one in the pro class. In the case of the D200, there will be no such need.

Technology is improving at a very quick rate, but I don't think you'd buy a new camera every year.

That said, with the info Ortega has given to me about the D80's new price, which seems to be only $250 more than the D40x, I have to admit it sounds like a good buy.

To anyone who has been offended by my words in the past threads, I apologize. I was just posting my opinions. Never meant to offend anyone. If you are happy with the camera you are holding in your hand, so be it, I never intended to get into a fight with anyone over it.
