At least the money you saved, you can use to buy other lenses and accessories.

Just a caution though.. People have the fixed mindset that D40 is a toy, so if you do the ocassional photography job, be prepared to be rejected on account of your camera only.. (I have ) and yah. the SB-400 is a toy to them too. (But this one has a certain validity to it as SB-400 may not be powerful enough for event or werdding photography)

Sometimes I am REQUESTED to use my D2x.. !@#$ Should the photographer not be allowed to use whatever equipment he wants, rather have the client dictate to him? Shows so much worry on the client's part that the photographer is incompetent. To these people, I always refuse. Whats the point?

the fact of life u have to know, and everyone should know is: equipment is important.

looks pro = shots taken should be pro = photos come out definitely pro

its all managing image. If u go to professional services firm like a bank or audit firm and those bankers and auditors wear like crap, will u still want them to work for u??? no rite?

same for photographer, if u wear professionally and use decent gears and look pro, ppl will respect u as a pro.

haha.. agree man.. its all abt image! ;)

Unless you are doing pro work.

If you are just taking photography as a hobby, then dun waste money on maintaining an image (unless you can afford it). Buy the equipment that you can afford, have money for accessories, and then go shoot photos.

This is quite an interesting thing that I have also observed when buying my D40. I was at a reputable and nice shop and they guy asked, 'why not a D80'? I said that essentially they were the same thing (image wise), just that the d80 had many more UI enhancements such as 'press one button can go straight to the setting you want to change' and a better 1000pixel AF system. I knew that the the rest is almost the same (apart from the fact that the D40 has some missing features that I don't find critical) reading the usual reviews and comparing myself for hours using the D80 and D40 Digitutors to see exactly how different the two models were. The guy shakes his head and says 'no loh...', and doesn't believe me when I implied that the D40 can more than hold its own. I realised that marketing is quite a powerful thing. If the D40 were renamed the D85, and priced higher than the D80, folks' feelings towards it might be much better! (with the argument that it's better because it's much lighter, it should be more expensive because it's more portable.) :P

Yes, Equipment is important, but... :dunno:
The quality of the photograph comes 90% from the photographer, not from the equipment.

I know that percieved quaity comes from the equipment you carry. But for the customer to demand that you use this equipment, that equipment, does it not equate to he does not trust your judgement, and to take it further, he thinks he knows better than you?

To buy a pile of expensive equipment to just "look pro" is darn stupid to me. But maybe it's true, in Singapore looks do matter. In the US when you carry an SLR you are automatically assumed to be pro. I guess Singapore people are kiasu kiasi until this extent. Of course, I will never use P&S for paid stuff lah :bsmilie:

Even if it's just a hobby, why must you go get a "pro image"? That really seems like low self esteem, or craving attention to me.

D40X + MONEY SAVED = D80 + lenses with better value for money.

I accept people's formula with D40, but if you intened to use anyother lens other than 18-55 mm and 55-200 VR the D80 is the way to go.

I had a D40, with that I couldn't use Tamron 90mm or 60mm Nikkor 60mm ( I accept these lenses will work with manual intervention) . Sold it and got D80.

Tamron 90mm 550 ~ 600 SGD (with D80)

or

Nikkor 105mm VR ~1100 SGD (with D40 / D40X)

Money saved = more expensive combination

If you want cost effectiveness, might as well get something with in-body stabilization too. ;)

I prefer AF-S lenses, to be honest. I'd pick an AF-S over a AF lens. The body is not as important to me. Cheap body+AF-S lens is more important than expensive body+AF lens for me.

That said, the D80 has one thing that I really miss. Wireless speedlight (Sb600/800) control.

Furthurmore, I prefer Nikon lenses with nikon cameras. Rarely does a third party lens maker churn out a nice lens (eg. Sigma 30mm).

And if you really wanted to save money... there was the D200 around, which I think you can get for about $500 more than the D80.

Sony or pentax. But I heard some.. erm... things about sony. And not to mention that Sony doesn't seem to be coming out with lenses ;p

You must note that sony doesn't specialise in opticals like Nikon and Canon, but electronics instead. I really wonder.

Pentax and Leica and all the other brands are in classes of their own.

Sony has several Carl Zeiss lenses to their lineup as well as the renowned Minolta G-lenses. So don't underestimate Sony also. ;p They do have quite an impressive lineup of lenses..

But Sony isn't really cost effective anymore if you are looking at these exotic lenses. ;p

Hi, maybe i need to clarify my above statement.

What I meant was.. perhaps due to lack of knowledge, consumers (especially local ones) tend judge you by the way u (and your equipment) looks. Just like if u drive a BMW, most ppl assume u r successful.. :)
