For your case, since you're interested in these subjects only. I do suggest that you try out this D40 first.

The kit lens is a basic one and some users have since reported that they got better pictures (colours and saturation) after they switched to the D70 kit lens (18-70). Practise more on the controls first. How to use the A mode, S mode as well as M mode... These will give u more room to learn vs a prosumer camera. Where possible, shoot RAW... This will allow u to have more control over the pictures and how you want them to be portrayed.

Also read more on the other things to learn... ;)

hi there...wanna ask u...do ppl actually own DSLRs of 2 brands? like nikon n canon? or do they only own DSLRs frm 1 brand?
I assume lens can change between brands...

Nope, lens are not interchangable between competing brands. There are other brands of lenses that could fit Nikon or Cannon respectively though, but not both.

Hi all... newbie to DSLR's... Am seriously considering D40, got a few questions, I'd read up most of the posts, but do appologize if this has been covered before:

1) Does Nikon have any track record of revising their newly launched DSLRs ? i.e. if I get the D40 now, will there be a chance that there's another D40 say rev B coming out say middle of next year?

2) How does DSLR pricing fluctuates? anyone could give any insight as to if the D40 will go down say ~$200 by middle or end of next year? which is 6 months away....

3) Did anyone of you that are proud owners of the D40 got the Court's package? (wondering how's the Tripod included as well as the camera partner? does that serves as an external Hdd to be able used on the PC as well?)

thanks in advance !

1) NO

2) You won't know... But there is often adjustments in price depending on demand/supply.

3) No idea. ;)

1) yes, sometime they do, just like D2X > D2Xs, D70 > D70s... but normally the revision(upgrade) is very minimal. But if you are talking about a fully new replacement, normally the interval between each replacement is 1.5yr (same goes for Canon).

2) most of the time dSLR price drop with time, IF im not wrong d40 price will not go down as much as $200 by the mid of 2007. IIRC my d50 price remain pretty stable throughout its production period(since April 2005 to recently d40 launch).
Yes, there might be some drop but i highly doubt the drop would be as much as $200.

3) No idea. :dunno:

edit: juz realised that the revision is also about 1.5yr apart.

Thanks Zac08 & ExploreZ....

So i guess price wise it will differ in terms of "freebies" that Nikon will offer say maybe in 07's PC show or some electronics expo...

Hmm... i guess will go down to Courts (AMK) again to see if they have the D40 in stock to check it out as well as the freebies...

thanks again ! :)

Don't base your purchase on the number of freebies you will get. Base it on:

1. Your needs - what you gonna use it for
2. Your budget
3. Feature/Function fit to your needs

Shop around -- don't just go to one shop. Hopefully, you will end up with a package that you will use for a long time to come and not "regret" after a couple of months that perhaps that D70s package or that 2nd hand D70 might have suited your needs better. :)

My $0.02. Cheers

Thanks for ur advice, Yeah, I did consider everything, from my needs (i will be upgrading from a PnS Fuji F10) , budget (did not even think of DSLR b4 becoz of the cost vs amount of time i will have to play with it) , and features... Considered the D80/D70s/D50 and of coz the D40, I think i'm not too pro and from the shots from the website reviews and previews, it suits my needs... :)

Freebies, mainly i'm targetting at the tripod and drybox ... HDD doesn't hurt either.. as I stated, i will be completely starting from scratch.. and since i love night shots/natural light from Fuji F10 with ISO1600, that's why the emphasis of Tripod. Btw, dcResource's review of D40 and the Night shot the reviewer took is damn nice imho... compare to F10 (of coz it's not a fair comparison lah :P

thanks again for the "look before u jump" advice ;)

I tried my friend's D40 lastnight. Camera is small but grip is ok, still quite comfortable. Its really a very speedy camera, we shoot raw and the continuous shooting is really good. I think we shoot around 10 pics then it starts slowing down.. Pic quality is great as usual(with all Nikon Dslr). Its well worth its price and is an excellent addition to the Nikon family.. I am very tempted to get one myself, the perfect travel/go anywhere camera.:)

HI Aaron80, when u say grip is ok , was your right pinky still griping or was it underneath the grip more of a "support" ? Never really hold a DSLR to really feel/shoot... i went to courts and held it... was surprised to find my pinky was half/under the base of the grip... donno if it will be a concern... probably had too much of expectation that it was "comfortable" from all the posts and web reviews :P nevertheless yeah it was speedy and cool... weight wise... still ok but i would definitely have the strap on everytime...

I share your same opinion.
My nose-diggging finger is not on the grip.
Though never handles DSLR before, but as long as u feel u got a firm and steady during prolonged shooting, should be fine.
me also considering d40, i can accept the handling, i just the right nudge to make me commit, after all my major concern is only the AF issue only.

i went to courts too, AMK one.
Sales person mentioned stock in friday or something.
I asked about the HDD, i was quite vexed when he did not understand my question.
I wanted to know how the HDD sync with camera.
He keep saying USB lor.
I asked if camera need any button (eg. like DPOF or alike) to activate the transfer,
he said USB lor.
USB USB USB....
end of the day, I assume that the small display on the HDD case will show the status, and it should be that plugging in will pull all the photos out... (never used such devices before).
nevertheless, for about $128 more, get a portable HDD storage is good enuf.
The bag is OEM and tripod is basic digipod and card is regular speed SD Kingston.

D40's review is out in Dpreview liao.. It got a highly recommended rating by Phil.. Congrats to Nikon for coming out with another winner..

thanks for the update!

that was really the nudge i was waiting for!
looks like i am giving up on 2nd hand d50,
after some math, a 2nd-hand d50 and kit lens is gonna bring me close to the price of a brand-new d40.
i was blown away by the unlimited continuous shooting (that d50 cannot do, noise control!

ultimately the decisive review from dpreview.
I guess a d40 is the baby Nikon dSLR for an amateur like me.

wah.... okok going to read the dpreview now.... :D
yaloh .. donno why AMK one soooo slow in getting in the D40...

I heard from someone that the tripod height ideally is at your shooting height... and the sales-girl at Courts Suntec was motioning her hand about slightly my chest level (i'm 178 btw) so donno if it's a concern.... anyways... that's not important.. the D40 is !!!

Hi,

I am new to the forum and I have upgraded to a DSLR camera with the D40. I bought mine at lucky plaza, DG, and I have got a very reasonable price on the kit. For those looking for a bargain, you can try there. I went to sim lim too but I don't like the sales pple there, they only care to sell and some don't know very much about the cams.

I am happy with the images I get and it's really fun trying out the different settings and the effects I get. Still learning and experimenting. Didn't regret getting a DSLR. :)

Ya bro, the D40 is definitely a worthwhile camera.. I myself oso v tempted to get one for travelling and general use.. The speed, size and noise performance of this cam really attracts me alot.. I must control my temptation.. Haha..:bsmilie: Hope to see many nice pics from your upcoming D40 soon.. Do update us once u get it..

save on a DX VR lens and use that money on a D40 backup.
sounds reasonable?:bsmilie:

skill not good enuf for posting here leh....

anyway, now im still looking for the deal breaker.
dunno:
Courts 1088 bundle (tripod, bag, 1GB (1x) SD and 40gb portable camera partner)
HN 1088 bundle (tripod, drybox, bag, 1GB (1x)+ 1GB (1x)+ can bargain for uv filter) or
CP 980 (1GB (1x))
Parisilk 960 (1GB)
any advice on that?
I got many SD cards (hi-speed) so dun really fancy the SD cards.

no doubt continuous shooting is good to have, but i doubt most people will take more than 10s of burst mode. d50 is capable of doing burst up to 8s on a fast card(before slowing down, using large jpg fine)

Hi... Where's HN? and how big is the drybox?
I guess (from my point of view at least) is the value btwn the HDD vs. the drybox... since I would definitely need a place to store my DSLR when i'm not using for prolong periods...

HDD is definitely good to have... but HDD (imo) should or would be coming down in price in the PC world... donno about drybox though... how much is a typical drybox storing say 2 or 3 lenses?

regards.

P/s: read the dpreview, tempted again... saw that Phill was using his pinky as support below the base and not gripping it

:dunno: I am still quite skeptical whether D40 will sell well. The route for lens upgrade or expansion seems limited... or expensive (good AF-S lenses).

BC

Well... the target audience is not the aspiring pro photog.. but more of those who want better image quality from a camera which is only slightly more expensive than those PnS out there...
