As with all electronics... when is the best time to buy? There are 4 computer shows a year. Each one will have better promotions than the last...

If you are interested in photography, go buy one and start shooting and don't look at the price list after that... because I can guarantee you that prices will drop and better deals will come up.

Only the AF-S/AF-I ones can, so yeah, no Nikon/Nikkor prime can AF on the D40 right now (dunno about Sigma/Tamron).
You can still get an AF-S 17-55 f/2.8 though if you're looking for a fast lens, or go MF.

Edit : My bad, there is an AF-S VR 105mm f/2.8 (for micro). But still no general purpose prime lens with AF on the D40.

Currently, there are no Tokina or Tamron lenses that auto-focuses on D40/x. You can still use it, but it would be manual focus.

Sigma has been releasing a range of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) lenses that will work with the D40/x. You can check out the following link for a list of lenses which will work on D40/x. One of the highly rated primes from Sigma that works on D40/x is the 30mm f/1.4.

More than just the 105/2.8VR.
There are more AF-S primes but mainly super teles.

Is that me or are you saying the exact contrary of what you said on the first line ? AFAIK all HSM/USM lenses will AF on the D40/x (I'm looking at the Sigma 10-20 by the way  reviews are quite good except Ken Rockwell who doesn't like the build (but some other ppl say it's fine or even good) since my wide angle converter doesn't quite cut it on my D40 (though it worked ok on my S5600)).

And yeah for huge pro telephoto but I was only thinking of around 50mm for some reason :embrass:

hmmm... not sure if what i said sounds right to you... but let me try to rephrase :)

Tokina and Tamron currently does not make lenses that will AF on D40/x. Sigma has a range of HSM lenses that will AF on D40/x.

Hope this is clearer... :p

Did you mean 50mm in FF or 50mm in crop factor 1.5 (i.e. 75mm)? If it is 50mm FF, then the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 would come close to that, and it would be a 45mm lens.

Oh yeah, I mixed a few brands while reading the lines, it's my fault

Hi

I just got my d40 from comex it comes with 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens.
Now considering whether to get d300.:D

Sigma latest lens, HSM VERSION 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 and 18-50mm f/2.8 is now availiable in SG, peninsular plaza-saw it.

Quoted $660 for former and $820 for latter.

hi all, a D40 user here... got my baby since august... and honestly the thing rocks...and had been using it very intensively and picked up alot in photography.

but lately as the knowledge deepens i've begin to find and realise the limitations of the D40 not so much though like ISO, bracketing, small grips, shutter and control buttons. so i intend to upgrade to a new set and want to use th eD40 as a back up. Overall the D40 never disappoint me.

So any recommendations for upgrades? I'm looking at D80...:dunno:

Eh eh.. relax... I don't know the performance of the 18-50mm Sigma. For so cheap a price (cheaper than the 30mm prime) I am... apprehensive. If you can find online reviews pls link here.. I too busy these few days. ;p

OOPS. Mistake. 18-200 is $820, 18-50 is $660. I mixed up the pricing in previous posts

I'm thinking of D80 too, but I believe I've yet to master everything a D40 can do... and of course being frowned at by my finance minister! Duh!

Yeah, will do some in-depth studies first of course! Thanks for the heads-up!
