He did mentioned he did not flash to the latest firmware. Could it be that reason?

I don't need to do -0.7 compensation with the D40x... and it produces very vivid colors. I only tweak the compensation when the metering doesn't do it right, which can be + or -. I wonder what kind of shots he is taking. My preference is to use spot metering, and next would be matrix. Don't use center-weighted much.

To get a better DOF, you need to open the aperture as wide as possible (i.e. smallest f-number). For the kit lens, at 18mm, the largest you can open the aperture is f/3.5. But as you move up to 55mm, the largest you can open the aperture is at f/5.6. Hence, there is a limitation in the amount of DOF because of the aperture. However, with proper angles and positioning, you can still achieve a DOF, but it would not be like pictures taken with f/2.8 or f/1.8 lenses.

Any suggestion what lens to get to achieve a shallow DOF?

Replied by PM to avoid thread going OT ;)

may i ask wat i need to get extra if i wanna buy Circular polariser, uv filter, nd and grad nd filter? it's 67mm thread right?

i need an adapter is it? approx how much wud it cost?

Kit is 55mm. Price wise you can refer to the Nikon Sticky Price List.

Nope, both kit and 55-200 are 52 mm (cheapest filters :D). Let's not go OT though.

so i confirm the 18-55 kit lens is 52mm thread?

Yes, I've got it right here, it's definitely 52 mm

Yah, you're right, thanks. Blame it on my F9 Maths!

thanks

i also need to get a adaptor ring or something right?

how much does that cost?

no need adapters, just get the filters straight away...

Just for basic protection UV filters are enough. For fancy effects, you can buy GND, CPL etc (if you don't know what those are for, they're probably not worth buying right now ;))

anybody here knows how much the price of D40 kit right now?
Thanks

Refer to the Nikon price thread, it's full of recent quotes.

any lens with constant f2.8 or f1.8/1.4...

sorry i am pretty new at this but i suppose all the prime lens cannot auto focus with D40 at the moment right?

Only the AF-S/AF-I ones can, so yeah, no Nikon/Nikkor prime can AF on the D40 right now (dunno about Sigma/Tamron).
You can still get an AF-S 17-55 f/2.8 though if you're looking for a fast lens, or go MF.

Edit : My bad, there is an AF-S VR 105mm f/2.8 (for micro). But still no general purpose prime lens with AF on the D40.
