Ahhh... I see... However, I had a D40x and don't recall it being called "Long Exposure NR", but simply "Noise Reduction". Maybe this is one of the minute differences between D40 and D40x? :) I'm just guessing that maybe that is why Thom Hogan wrote it in http://www.bythom.com/d40review.htm that "The D40x seems to be very close to the D80 in acuity, though as you bump up the ISO value with noise reduction turned on, the D40x seems to lose a bit of detail that the D80 doesn't (but that detail comes at the expense of slightly more noise on the D80).

Maybe someone who have access to a D40 & D40x can confirm if this is one of the differences between the D40 and the D40x ;)

You can see the following website on D40x noise reduction:
http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=3148

D40 and D40x don't have High ISO reduction. Both have long exposure NR, simply called noise reduction.

That is a great pic of your doggie :)

Definately not blur... clear as can be ;) I see that you used:

- Aperture mode with f4
- Shutter at 1/60s
- ISO 100
- Focal length = 26mm (39mm on 35mm format)
thanks. here's another pic of her sulking cos she want to go out of the door, but i don't let her. haha.

Sounds like you had great fun with the D40! To me, having fun is one of the most important parts of photography ;) So you kenna bitten by the f/2.8 lens? (BBB virus is on the move!) If you want the f/2.8 lens, they don't come 18-200mm in one piece (how I wish they did!), and you would still need to switch lens. I find it a hassle to do that too... and that is why they call the 18-200mm the lazy lens. The 18-200mmm is almost the same as what you got, i.e. 18-55 & 55-200, but with the additional VR. So... you may want to skip the 18-200 and get the 17-55 f/2.8 instead :) But I must say that the 18-200 is a great lens to travel with.

BTW... what is the link to your Flickr page?

ME TOO! Photography is about having fun and as long as we enjoy it, we can learn more and with interest, we develop the skills that would make us great photographers!

As for the 18-200VR, it is a lazy lens...LOL..if i have the extra cash, ill definitely get this lens to replace my kit lens and the 55-200..call me lazy LOL

the 17-55 f/2.8 is rather expensive right? i was thinking of getting one of those nikon prime lenses like the 50mm f/1.4 but i have to manually focus...shouldnt be too troublesome i think and its quite reasonably priced too. what do you think? i love taking bokeh shots of people and objects.

wow !
NICE SHOT!

Wonder what I am doing wrong?

I agree this is one expensive and lazy lens. I once had this lens on a tour; the VR helped saved the day on many occasions. But when I compiled the photos, I realised only 10% were taken with more than 70mm. The rest all falls between the 18-70mm range, which makes me think twice on replacing my current lens.

If you're a lazy zoomer, then Nikon has made this lens for you! :)

Hey people !!! I just bought my Nikon D40. My first ever dSLR. Looks good and feels good !!!
At last i can call myself a Nikonian... Haha...

Any good photography courses that will help me get the best out of my system?

Long Exposure Dark-Frame Subtraction Noise Reduction is the long long version for noise reduction. On the D40/x it reduces hot pixels (which you shouldn't even begin to see until you go to 3min photos).

The camera make a second identical exposure with the shutter closed. This lets the camera know exactly which pixels are hot and exactly how much leakage there is. The camera then subtracts the dark frame image from the shot you just made and saves the result

A second dark exposure is as long as the main exposure. That means you have to wait an extra four minutes after making a four minute exposure, total 8min -a real pain.

I see! So it actually doubles your exposure time and that's why it's slow! Wow ok! thanks for the heads-up! I learnt something new today!

A newbie here, need some help.
Wanted to buy old Nikon Flash [obsoluted models].
Are SB80EX, 28DX OK.
If I set Camera Manual, Flash Auto, OK ?

Thanks for all the help.

Hi guys,

I am considering a Nikon D40 as my first DSLR.

My interests mostly in taking pictures inside exhibition hall or museum
Conditions:
1) the light condition is usually fairly dim and/or not evenly spread over the exhibits
2) one would normally be able to stand about 5ft away from the actual exhibits
3) some exhibits also have a glass house protecting them
4) tripods are not allowed
5) flash are not allowed

Need all the advise I can get:
a) What kinda lens would typically come with a D40 purchase or can we purchase just the body alone?
b) What kinda len(s) would be suitable under those conditions (on the low and high end).
c) Any particular settings to take note?
d) Any other advise you could give would be great or any way to read up on these topics.

Thank you in advance. Really hope to see some replies.:)

b) What kinda len(s) would be suitable under those conditions (on the low and high end). If you want AF, the fastest would be a f2.8 lens. Otherwise using MF can go up to f1.4.

c) Any particular settings to take note? Set to Scene Mode or crank up the ISO if it's ok for you.

Happy buying and shooting! :D

Because of your conditions, you would need to get fast lenses (i.e. lenses with large aperture, e.g. f/2.8, f1.8, f/1.4, f/1.2). These lenses are normally expensive. Because D40/x can only use AF-S or AF-I lenses, you can go to check out the price list for these lenses to get an estimate.

My recommendation is to go with a D80, and you can get 2nd hand or 3rd party fast lenses. ;)

If you are not a pro, or a beginner who is not familiar with handling demanding light situations with "slow" lenses, I have to concur with Geraldkhoo that a D80 is a better choice for you.

But note that you have to factor in the cost of a fast lens too.

Some advise needed here, anyone knows if the D40 can meters with a 50mm 1.8?

Know it will be MF, but what about metering, is it compatible with D40? TIA ;)

yes it meters

manual focus with the green dot.

non AF lenses, so far i know the AI-P 45mm pancake meters on the d40 too

I think its time for me to get a flash unit! Had a mini party at a friend's house and the light conditions didnt permit me to take shots indoors without bumping up the iso to 800-1600 and i used the flash on board and i must say, it is rather harsh...well which built in flash unit on any camera isnt harsh eh?

Was discussing upgrade options with someone who used to be into photography (film) and he asked if i need to use a flash gun made by nikon like the sb series. Is it true? Or can i use 3rd party guns?

Pondering on an upgrade for this christmas...what shall it be...
