D4 User Thread

Hi guys. Good evening.

I have some questions to ask.

How many D4 shooters here uses NEF uncompressed, NEF lossless compressed and NEF compressed?

Any observable difference between lossless compressed and compressed?

Any observable difference between 14 and 12 bits?

Thanks

Lossless Compressed, 14bit. Have not really tried other settings.

I use NEF uncompressed 14 bit together with the Sony XQD (S) 32GB for sports and wild life.

Have not used the other options so unable to comment.

All right, thanks for the feedback Luminare and Lenslust.

I saw some banding and pixilation when using NEF lossless compressed on some shots. I'll need to shoot some more to confirm.

So I guess it is back to 14 bits, uncompressed for now.

I will definitely need to get 1~2 XQD card and a fast CF to pair up.

Any other place to source for XQD here besides CP other than buying online from Amazon & B&H? The prices for XQD here is :o

Guys, if you don't mind sharing. How do you setup your slot 1 and slot 2 storage?

Thanks.

I bought my XQD and the reader from Amazon. Price in SG is nothing short of shocking.

Both my CF and XQD are 32GB and although the D4 states 864 shots, it does cramp up to a 1000 per card.

I normally set XQD as slot 1 primary and slot 2 CF as flow over for sports and wildlife (birding).
I set CF as primary and XQD as flow over for any other gene that do not need 10~11 fps over prolong periods. I also set XQD for jpeg instead of flow over and I bring along my lappy and XQD reader for paid event shoots

You saw the banding in NEF zoomed into 100% on PC or prints? I haven't really noticed that significant a difference when shooting 12/14bits. I've all along been shooting with the same settings from D2X, D3S, D4, D700, D800, D600 also. Kind of weird.

XQD can get from Amazon, free shipping, it's dirt cheap. Buying two pieces from Amazon can only get you 1 piece (same capacity) from CP/Sony.

For my settings:
Shooting Menu "A - Work"
Slot 1 & 2 : RAW + JPEG (M+Normal) (mirror to both slots, XQD as main)
Settings Menu: "A - Landscapes" or "B - Events" or "C - Portraits"

Shooting Menu "B - Leisure"
My Slot 1 & 2 : RAW (depends on which slot has card, write one copy to it, XQD as main)
Settings Menu: "A - Landscapes" or "C - Portraits" or "D - Birding"

Unfortunately this cannot be done on the D600, haha... when I swap cameras I always need 5 minutes to remind myself which camera I'm using.

When I set RAW to XQD and Basic JPEG to CF, I usually get around 1100 shots for 32GB XQD. I shoot at 14 bit lossless compressed, and RAW + Basic

Have you guys ever encounter that using a D4 to shoot AD/events and throughout even before morning session ends or halfway, the shutter speed maybe even over 1/125 and above but (I'm not sure whether is the mirror or shutter) slapping sound and feel of it gets slower be it in single shot or CH?
I am wondering is it something to do with my D4 or is it to do with the memory card...

Nope, done a few ADs and Events and tonnes of leisure shoot with the D4, I don't face your mentioned issue, probably a gut feel from while using? If still in worry, best is send in NSC.

Hello guys.

Thank you very much for the feedback.

I saw the banding / pixelation on the monitor zoomed in, on print it is not very obvious. I saw it only on a few pictures. High ISO, shadow areas. Like ears, under chin / neck area.

I'll need to look into the cause of it. It can also be my own fault in over tweaking the file or the light is not good at all.

Hhhmmm, looks like there are a myriad ways to set the storage method to suit the shooting event. Thanks for the info.

I just revert back to 14 bits / uncompressed. NEF File sizes are about 30-40% larger. JPEGs are set to medium for quick reviews and picks during developing on LR4/NX2.

That's about it. I never got to like using the settings bank ABC & D. Mine is always on bank A.

Hi Ominblue.

I know what you mean. I have encountered the same problem you described. The D4 will slow down and be a little sluggish when the battery is very low. This is most pronounced when you use the 70-200 f/2.8 VR lens, AFC, continuous high at 10FPS, NEF + OPTIMAL QUALITY FINE JPEG and really gunning the D4.

Try this. If you do encounter this again, check the battery info % and take note of the value. Replace the exhausted battery with a fully charged battery and note the change in responsiveness.

Mine starts to be sluggish when the battery info indicates about 35% and below.

Hi all, glad to see a D4 thread. Just bought my D4 a week ago as my whole FX system (D700, f2.8 70-200mm VRII, f2.8 24-70mm, f2.8 16mm fisheye) was stolen from me in a train in Switzerland.

Thanks for all the insightful posts which some of the seniors here post. Will be leeching the knowledge from these those post.

Prices of XQD cards are really exhorbitant in Singapore. Placed a backorder for an XQD card from Adorama but still no still on when they are able to ship out the card. USD$99.5 for a H series 32GB card.

S series too expensive so I chose to go for the lower model.

Cheers all!

Nope. I have to shoot in Continuous low when bursting... because D4 is just shooting too fast... If on CH, someone blinked.. I get 3 pictures of a closed and half opened eyelids...

Hmmm... Maybe I should proceed to NSC like what you adviced. Thanks.

Wahaha... That's a good one!

I hope it's rather my gut feel and not something to do my machine. Also hope it's not 14/12 bit causing it (as based on my own suspicion)

Thanks Both:thumbsup:

Does anyone know where in Singapore sell Kirk or RRS L-bracket for D4?

You have to order RRS L-bracket online, they don't sell here in Singapore. Not sure about Kirk!

Using Fittest L plate bought from TK for my D4.

Works well.

I am using the same too, but if using the WT-5, the slot does not seem to be long enough to accommodate it properly.

I'm still on WT-4 so not much of an issue, it can't be used together ie: loose, or totally cannot mount onto the camera?

It's pretty sturdy IMHO.
