I tried to use Capture NX 2.2.2 trial version to open the raw file, but it is too slow and I hate to wait. if you took D300s raw file, you may download the beta Camera Raw 5.5 from http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Camera_Raw_5.5. It is faster however the beta expired on 31 Oct 09.

had a 17-55 f2.8 (from a friend) to try out but would like something with a wider range (yes, i'm someone who does not like to change lens that often).. the good ones from Nikkor are really ex man, even the 18-200mm VRII.. thinking of Tamron and the rest.. also looking at the 17-50 VC f2.8 incase i get too comfortable with the formal.. they also have a 18-270.. which looks compact enough..
any bros here can recommend?

Actually I have been using back my old kit lens (the D80's 18-135mm) and it performs superbly on the D300s. There's really no need for a new lens if you already have one unless you require the extra focal length or wider aperture.
yeah.. i kinda missed my 18-105mm kit lens from my D90 since i sold as a package..
i'm considering the 18-270mm tamron.. but also eyeing on the 17-50mm f2.8 VC.. this really make the hobby suddenly very interesting..
bro.. not sure whether can post the picture here but nice one!! and guess what.. i just sold my 70-300mm VR!!!.. hahaha...
this D300s reminds me of a blade or muscle back.. got skill then can use.. my previous D90 is like a cavity back..
had my doubts on Tamron.. focus speed etc.. or should i just save up for the new 18-200?
i just bought the D300s after using D90 for 9 months. Just tried out the D300s using the D90 kit lens 18 - 105mm. OMG the photos turned out to be so much better, sharper than the D90 and each time i snap a photo, the shooting and snapping sound is so much faster than the D90. Besides that, the 51 AF focus point is AWESOME! Haven't got the chance to try the HD video yet but the idea of dual slot is cool. i am using SD card slot currently for storage of photos and in menu mode, i can choose to have the storage of recording HD video in a CF card. The D300s is also wrapped watertight in rough-textured rubber, perfect to grip the camera than the D90! :thumbsup:
Of course there are some functions that im not used to after using the Nikon D90, like the in-camera image editing, there is no more fisheye effect function in the Nikon D300s. In the D90, you can turn around and choose A, M, P, macro mode, slow rear flash mode, portrait mode but there is no more front controls settings to choose in D300s. The flash for D90 auto pop up whenever you set to flash mode but for the D300s, you will have to press a small button beside even though you are already in flash mode. Ex-D90 users initially will find that how come there is no flash when it's already in flash mode. :thumbsd:
Overall, IMO i still think that the D300s is still a very good and better camera compared to the D90, just that i will need to get used to the D300s functions

bro, my take on the video.. don't set too high an expectation.. i thought AF for video is cool until you hear the servo sound and clicking (switching C,S,M) and you still have to press AF to focus.. in the end i use M.. which is like the D90.. but then if you have external mic (which could be a hassle..) that eliminate the machine sound.. i interesting thing is i didn't know the servo sound is like "tiak tiak tiak" hahaha!! :sweat:
overall still happy with it (have to be..) and am looking at the phottix 3rd party grip.. any views on that?

Time to hire someone to carry the boom pole.
Likely it's your SD card. Which class are you using? Try not to use Class 2 cards.
Hmm.. then it should not be a problem. I overlooked the fact that it's a D300s, not a D90. In any case, yes, it is good to test with another card.
