ahahah
Canon 50D specs don't come very close to the D300s.
9 focus points vs 51
much faster AF
6.5 FPS vs 8 with battery grip (7 w.o)
Dual card slot
better at high ISO
HD video recording
D300/D300s is a much more full camera then the 50D.
This is why nikon has made only small changes because they are already leading the market with the D300. Canon has a lot of catching up to do in the sense of camera bodies.
I am a Canon user and would like to support Canon,. But I must say you are right about the 50D not being on par with the D300 series.
Canon has lost to Nikon on several aspects. Flash technology-wise, Canon is backwards and less consistent than Nikon's system. Focusing wise, Canon's cams are generally not as responsive or has fewer focusing points. (Except for the 1D series, which cost a bomb.)
And Canon makes really dumb releases, like from the 20D to 30D, 40D to 50D.
MY suspect is the "sudden" or unexpected release of the 50D was a very weak response to Nikon's D300.
Canon does have it's strong points though. It's lower range cams like the 500D and it's higher range cams in the 1D series are pretty much on par with Nikon's equivalent range in terms of popularity, if not better. And the 5DII still rules over Nikon in the choice of many professionals and enthusiasts where cheaper full frame cam is concerned.
Canon just cannot make it in the mid-range aspect and they need to really buck up if they want to be back in competition. If you guys need to consider, get the D300 or the new D300s instead of Canon's 50D. If you can afford the extra cash, that is. The price diff gives you features and handling you will appreciate.
well, officially the d300s and the d3000 is already out yesterday, 30 july, but so far no prices yet
new cameras coming out like water coming out from a tap..

I think late Aug would be a more realistic timeline... anyways.. they also included the quiet shutter. Well lets see what the reviews say, but thus far, being a d300, d700 and d3 user, not thrilled at all, and.... For the price, get the d700.
Also, the video is only 720p so if you want like real high quality stuff, better off with a proper video cam.
Still, many of Canon's DSLRs are a lot cheaper than Nikon's equivalents, imho
Maybe the the D3000 will change that? ;p

agreed. Canon equivalents seem to be cheaper and that is not only the body. The lenses as well. I hv several frens who dumped their DX bodies when they were upgrading to FF and switched over to Canon becos while the price of the bodies are quite similar (5D MK2 vs D700), the lenses prices are very different eg Nikkor 24-70 costs abt USD1700 while Canon equivalent about USD1100.
If the live view AF mode is gonna be as "ultra slow" as D90 then it will be redundance. :thumbsd:
This is so untrue when it comes to the flash... The other day a friend went round asking about the 430ex2. And it cost like $480... I got my SB600 for $350 a few years back. And the $460 for a 2nd hand SB800...
since the D300s is not a major upgrade or update
will be seeing D400 in next few quarters ?
The D400 (or by any other name) is bound to be launched... unless Nikon collapses (Yikes!!)... But I won't be too hopeful that a D400 will be launched before 2010...
