I never trust Kingston, cheap but......:sweatsm:
But the question is, had anybody tried using a normal Kingston CF card successfully on a D300?
I was thinking, is the CF card I have defective?

Their card is always slower then the rated speed....;p
I presume that you press the trashcan and mode buttons to get the flashing FOR on the LCD, this is not enough to format the card. You will have to press the 2 buttons again to format it while the flashing FOR is on the LCD.
If you use the menu to format it should be OK.

Ha.. nvm i figured out. answered my own question
I had tried both methods but both dun work.. The menu method even tell me format completed but it was like almost instantanus the moment i press format.. As for the 2 buttons method, i cannot get the camera to format and the word "FOR" just kept flashing..
Now the issue is, can D300 read a normal speed CF from Kingston? If there are people out there which dun have such problem, then i would think the card is the problem and will get it changed.
how long do you want the camera to take to format your card?
are you able to record any image with the card? if so the 2nd question don even valid.
I cannot record anythink on the card cos the word FOR is on the LCD instead of the no. of shots left..
try re-insert ur card or format it using PC and then use the camera to format again. as far as kingston mem card, i have been using their SD for quite a while, not even a single data corruption after snapping 30k+ photos.
I wonder why Nikon made the D300 & MB-D10 such that one battery remains in the body & one only in the grip? Changing the camera battery will be a hassle as one would need to remove the grip first. Perhaps it's to accommodate the EN-EL4 batteries? I set my D300 to use the grip's battery first before the body's battery. Prefer the MB-D100's rear door 2 battery compartment.

There are always pros and cons for each design.
Cons:
- cannot change battery inside D300 conveniently.
Pros:
- allows larger-capacity batteries to be inserted into the grip yet maintain a battery inside D300. The capacity increase is good enough that you probably don't need to replace the D300 battery during assignments.
- easier to install and remove the grip during assignments. No need to re-insert another battery in D300 and fit back the battery door.
- a more compact grip for storage in the camera bag when removed.

Encountered something strange with D300 today.
Current Im using a "normal" speed Kingston CF 4GB Card and when i have pressed the shutter, the counter showed "r12", meaning i have 12 shots of buffer rite? Btw, the setting is JPEG large fine. As in the manual, i should have abt 43 shots based on a 2GB Extreme III CF. So i tot maybe my card is very very slow that's why it showed "r12".
So today i made a trip to the shop and got a Lexar 8GB UDMA 300X CF, thinking i should get a larger buffer. But when i inserted the card in, i also see "r12" and i tried to blast at high speed and i only got 15 shots before the whole shooting slowed down. Tried with the Kingston card and i get the same result. I tried with JPEG small fine and i got the same thing with both cards also.
In the end i was very disappointed cos both cards displayed the same performance in camera. The question is, did i not set something in my camera that can changed that? Or there's something wrong with my camera? The setting for "Max. continous release" in the menu is @ 100 all this while. So what could have gone wrong..
Really appreciate any inputs from other users out there to shed some lights.

You probably turned on the Active D-Lighting. Turn it off and you'll see the buffer go back up.
Off ur D-lighting,ISO NR,Long expose NR and set ur JPEG compression to size priorty.
play around with the setting.no point off everything unless u need to shoot 100 pic in 1 go.

Playing with the setting did squeezed a lot more out of the buffer size..
I managed to get "r26" JPEG Large fine when i off the D-Light, High ISO NR, Long Exp NR and set the file compression to size priority. Really appreciated all the wonderful help i can get here..
And also one more thing to ask, will i be able to get more out of the buffer if i go for the Lexar 8GB 300x UDMA CF?
Very tempted to get..
