D200: Would Nikon Singapore Dare...

in this case, you can buy the camera in australia as it is worth even the air tickets. (plus holiday there.)

there are reasons for the high price in singapore.

firstly, the market is too small and unlike the japanese, australian and american market where every house hold would at least have a camera. in singapore, there are families which borrows camera when they go for holidays.

another issue on the warranty, some brands are not able to award international warranty because their product is manage by an agent. if that is the case the agent of one country would refuse to service products brought from another agent (foreign).

in some cases, the brand is imported by the regional office of the brand, they could then award international warranty as the servicing is done by the head company.

mostly for such cases, the camera will be cheaper as it has skip the middle man.

however, if you compare the price with another country it could still be slightly expensive due to the small market. afterall they still have to pay for the overhead.

for example: 10 years back mechanise in brunei is double the price of singapore and most bruneian will do their shopping in singapore.

We should all stick to English as the medium here - there are some who are also equally guilty of posting messages in Malay.

as a businessman they will never buy the "dare you" technique. especially in singapore. who wants to suffer a lost and start a pricely warfare. so you can forget about the idea. remember the petrol warfare? it did not last too.

if you put yourself in the shoes of the dealer and agents. i do'nt know if it will really make you start a cut throat warfare just by someone "daring " you.

everybody knows it is not a good way to do business and all business man will try to avoid this situation.

where gt... didnt mention ur name wad..... lol! nvm....
nt attacking u...

its just that... i dun understand why must pple be concerned about the bug, prices. its just that. If you can afford the camera, get it shoot more talk less. If the bug will really hinder the camera, Nikon will never release the camera until the bug has been fixed.

why be so critical about bugs... and the price. we say its a rip-off for Nikon to sell its D200 at such a price ? so are we expecting Nikon to sell D200 at its cost price and see its doom within a year ? and let it go bankrupt just because its trying to compete with other brands by selling at a lower price ?

If D200 is being sold at such a price, it means the functions and built and quality will justify the price that you will be paying for it.

I have a question to ask. Will bug affect the pics that we take or controls function proplem?:)

Glennyong, how do you know if I don't already own a Canon 1Ds Mk 2? I could be the richest guy in the forum, or simply just a poor guy buying his first DSLR.

Either ways, no one would want to pay more than necessary. You may not know it, but the Canon 5D is priced about $1,000 more in Singapore than US or Japan, and we are talking about the same time period (launch time). Of course DSLR prices may dip over time; that's fair but that was not the issue I had raised.

Why be concerned about bugs? Because there are more experienced people than myself in this forum, and I only want their views. For example, some of the new Canon 24-105 IS f/4 lens have a serious flare problem and have been recalled. I wonder if you would not be, in your own words, "critical" if you had a lens like that.

Btw, the remainder of your arguments completely miss the mark also. I never suggested that Nikon Singapore should sell at cost price or below average variable costs or anything. If I may refresh your memory by referring to my first post in this thread, I had defined "rip off" as "pricing significantly higher than the street price in other benchmark countries".

December is coming. Holiday time is here. I could use the difference to go on a modest holiday and buy one elsewhere. Or maybe, consider donating the savings to NKF again :bsmilie:

IF the bugs will affect controls functions and affect the pics, i believe nikon will not release the camera if its a realli big issue.

but since nikon has decided to release the camera, do u think its a big issue to them ?

*in scenario, would salesman come to you and say, hey erm..i have a realli good insurance to sell u... "blah blah blah..." and erm... but theres some big problems with the insurance, but we are stil selling it..* <-- would u buy it ?

things like backfocusing, under/over exposure are all technical faults. not the software. as for the well known CF card blinking, i am nt sure if its belong to the technical side of the problem too.

for me, i believe, if the camera has been decided to be mass produced, issues like bugs and stuffs should have been corrected at the developmental stages, and when the final prototype is being produced, at that time, i believe most of the bugs, major bugs have been corrected, and whats left maybe the small ones which may or might not affect user usage.

tats in my own personal knowledge. i dunno if theres pple out there who cannot continue shooting because of the ever-present bug problems or its because of the bug that pple dun wanna buy that camera.. - , - !

yes, if there are insect bugs inside, it will certainly affect the pics esp when they like to rest on the imaging sensor or leave droppings on it. haha! call pest-busters!

All companies with new product will be priced against market size, singapore is a small market IMHO. So, prices would be higher naturally..my 2 cents

ok. shall not continue. i love peace. i understand that u wanna get a dslr.as mentioned about the bugs problem already. Simple. cameras and electronics stuffs priced higher in singapore den elsewhere ? blame on the taxes, and people who is selling them.

u get the grey goods, warranty not covered in nikon singapore, unless its a international warranty or warranties recognised by NSC singapore. Canon and Nikon. 2 different technologies. 2 different companies. 2 different cameras of different specifications, made by 2 different manufacturers. in short. its the same as why the fuji apple cost more than the apple since both of them are apples ? why should the microsoft S+arck mouse cost more than a Logitech mouse since both of them are mouses ? ;)
