On the menu, switch off the AF assist lamp.
Try autofocusing. The AF assist lamp should be off.
Now go back to the menu, switch on the AF assist lamp.
Try autofocusing again, and the AF assist lamp will still be OFF unless you depress the center of the directional pad.
Is this is bug or a feature? :dunno:
I am on the 1.01 firmware BTW.
Sorry to dig this thread up... i google n this thread came up.:bsmilie:
So, i also have the same problem as TS.. press the centre multi directional button, the AF assist now come back. weird behaviour.. i thought my AF assist lamp was DEAD. ;(
oh ya, im using d200 of course. with v2.00 firmware version.
You must be in centre focus point AND focus mode S (single-servo auto focus) for the AF assist lamp to activate if needed in low light. This is also apparently in the D200 manual lol
This also applies to allowing the AF assist on a speedlight (mine's a SB-600) to activate, so if you aren't in centre focus point then NO AF ASSIST! When you press the multi-directional button you reset the focus point to the centre (unless you reprogrammed it). AF Assist works regardless of Auto Focus Area Mode, just as long as you're in the centre point and S.
A trick is to change to "Dynamic area AF with closest subject priority" (the top solid rectangle) then push the directional pad in any direction, this will activate the AF assist lamp if needed and find the focus point.
Another trick to press and hold the AF-ON button to keep the lamp on.
