ok! my point of view, !!,,
after switching to digital, i become very confident in what i shoot, just click & click, no worries. & it speed up my learning process, cause i can view instantly, something not right , shoot again loh,!!
so, go for the D100! :D sure win one! ;)

hmmm...

Yes yes, and learn nothing in the process.

Photography is as much as learning from your bad photos as well as getting good photos based on skill.

Frankly, I don't see anyone in this thread capable of going very far with their photography with their current attitudes.

well, so long as u make it a point, that u improve on the next shot on ur digital, i guess it's really a nice learning platform.

but for film wise, i feel that u're forced to learn no matter what, for the cost of developing and such soon catches up wth u. so u really have to make ur shot counts to really justify ur expenditure. thus, i feel that in this process, u'll definitely learn as u go along and hopefully in the long term, progress.

but then again, if the film camera is set in AUTO or PROGRAM mode... i wonder if the guy would even learn anything at all? thus, MANUAL CAMERAS... hahaha

FM2!!

well, digital and film...
each has its own unique advantages, u can't really argue.

Stop the press... I got misinterpreted

Jeff asked about D100 as he is using a F80. So he is asking about digital format over film. He further states that he is considering moving to F5 after using D100. So I gather that he is a film guy and proposed the F100 instead of the D100...

apologies that my words are misread.

I can't believed that someone compare D100 with F100. This guy must be nuts. Try loan from someone and look through the viewfinder. You would know the difference.

hey guys...

thanks for the comments... i know that film will always be the way to go... i just wanna confirm what i am doing now and also sometimes when covering events and stuff... i guess digital comes to play... but for own personal shooting... own personal pleasure... i really would love to shoot with slides... now the problem is... since i am going to learn from the D100... should i buy a new D100 or a second hand D100?? anyway... anyone knows how much it cost to have a new one or a 2nd hand one... and does anyone have any lobang???? hehe... more adivce please...

cheers
jeffrey

Wait for the launch of D2H, then u'll see a lot of 2nd hand D100s. :D

recently, there are a few thread in the buy and sell where owners of D100 are putting them up for sale...
a few la.

guess second hand would be around S$2k to S$2.2?
guess the owners of D100 takes very good care of their gear. it costs a bomb so it only makes sense if they take good care of it. right? :sweatsm:

it is really entirely up to u to decide whether u should be getting a second or first hand camera.

get a S2Pro!!! haha

AJ23... thats a real good idea... :D

anyway... the S2Pro... its not really compatible with nikon lens that i already have right??? so i think i rather stick to the D100 since i am already comfortable with the nikon cameras... more familiar... ;p
but thanks for the suggestions...

by the way... i am unsure what SEED actually is??? what u all do when u all meet up??? can elaborate? :dunno: ... haha... :p

Most, if not all Nikon D and G lenses should be compatible to S2 Pro. Cheers bro, another Nikon user. :bsmilie:

The next coming SEED is next Wednesday, 27th August, at the B1 Food Court of Peninsula Plaza.

Hey... My 2cents comment

Whether to get the D100 or not, is quite a personal subjective matter. But don't use reasons like testing and learning to get the D100 cos if you really want to learn and test, go for a FM3A to even a FM10 can learn more things.

Herewith a few pointers to help you formulate your reasons to make up your mind:

Pro of D100 Digital Cam:
1. Get to review pic after every shot
2. No film required... shot anytime, anywhere, anything, even can close your eyes to shoot, :bsmilie: whatever you want... cos no film, free photo.
3. Cheap running cost if you don't develop
4. Reuse back all your investments, ie lenses, flash, etc.

Con:
1. Output quality not as good as Film
2. Keeps coming newer design, features, specs, etc
3. Original cost of the Cam is very high
4. There is a life span on the memory cards, and would cost a bomb to replace a memory card.
5. Again you will feel like holding a F80 in hand cos the D100 is also plastic body very similiar to F80, unlike the D1 series, ie D1x, D1H, D1, D2H etc, uses F5 Magnesium body.

Suggestion, why not wait for Canon 30D to be out cos the expected price is only $1500 and this would definitely push the D100 to slash price. Believe they will slash if Fuji S2pro start to slash theirs also.

Actually, this post is what I found 'unbelievable' unless maybe you try to explain more about "...look through the viewfinder. You would know the difference.".
:dunno:

Why don't you look at the spec. :D

Cheers. ;)

hey guys...

thanks for the comments... ... since i am going to learn from the D100...

when comes to learning, there are 2 main school of thoughts:

1) Learn with 35mm film SLR: might be slower due cost of film + developing time. But those who start on this track will agree that the knowledge learnt stays with you when you choose to move on to digital/medium/large formats.

2) Learn with DSLR: can shoot more, thus learn faster but might be tempted to just get the good shot out the bad ones and forgo learning why a shot is bad etc.

Guess that you have made your choice.

Happying learning!

haha... i agree that once u use a film slr to shoot and u make a mistake... u will most prob remember it cause its just the agony that u did not choose the right settings at that time... ...

And i also agree that using a dslr will make u less careful with ur shoots because u just shoot and shoot... so.... ... still a dilema hey...haha... :bsmilie:

but i guess i will think of buying the D100 when the prices are lower or a good second offer is available... cause i guess having a digital slr in ur arsenal also allows u too be a little more flexible... able to help shoot in digital format for school or side projects... or even for just trying out new techniques... without feeling the pinch... i just neeeeeedddd to aquire better manipulation of my shots so that when i shoot with slides... the outcomes would be better... ;p

Hi Guys !

This is my first time in the forum. Just found out about this forum while I was searching for some articles on the D100. Anyway, I just got the D100 two days ago and I am still trying to figure out how to use it.

As mentioned by Jeff, shooting with a DSLR is totally different with a normal film SLR. You simply fire of without any care in the world.....especially if you are using a 1GB CF card.

After using it for 2 days, I can easily say that the D100 is still slow when it comes to shutter lag. You still need to wait for half-a-second before the shutter fires off. That said, it simply implies that Sports Photography is basically out of the question for me. But, the build quality of the D100 seems to be a lot better than the S2Pro.

Got my D100 for only $2500 (2nd Hand - 2 mths old) and I am still trying to look for the MB-D100 battery grip.

So, if you do intend to get the D100, you'll probably have to wait until the first week of Sep before the new stock arrives.

If you can afford it, buy a D100. I used to be an F80 user and have never looked back since making the switch. My photography has developed so much since moving to digital - now i get instant feedback and no hesitation to shoot means you experiment more than you would with film. No damn annoying film changes when the action is going on.
The biggest downside for me has been the 1.5x factor. It's great for Zoom (my 200mm is now 300mm), but wideangle is gone. My 17-35 AFS is no longer the lens it used to be. So I've had to add the 12-24mm dx to my kit. It's a great lens, shame about the f4 though.

I can't imagine ever shooting film again!
