CSC sees bug as dust.

$120 is way too much for me to pay, I would be happier to keep the bug in my camera and give it a name.

Don't mean to be laughing at your predicament but this line just made me burst out laughing out loud.

Anyway as u said some costs are just lan lan lor.

True story...

A bug somehow crawled inside the upper LCD display of my 7D. I could see it crawling around for a couple of days. It was long and thin. I named him Frankfurter.

Frank (I shortened his name) disappeared after the 2nd day. I assumed that he entered the digestive system of the camera cause I haven't seen him since. Poor Frank.

You could have told CSC that you will publicize this matter if they did correct it for free. What is $60 to Canon for us to continue to believe in their marketing?

this one must talk to manager liao la.

A small black bug have been spotted in my VF. Last week was still walking around the VF. But this week it stayed at a position for more then 3 days believing that it's dead by now. Tried all method trying to get it out but none worked. Today I came down to CSC and told them about this, they told me that dust is not covered by warranty and want me to pay $120 for the cleaning service. I am using a 6 month old 7D which is still under warranty. I was damn angry so I went to look under the terms and condition of warranty and it only states dust and dirt is not cover by the warranty and now they want me to pay $60 for the service.
I think everybody should know that 7D is a dust resistant camera, and the lady at the counter told me that dust will still get in even after using an L lens because the shutter is moving. Totally ridiculous. Also sharing that a technician by the name of Andree really tried to solve my problem by asking the manager for a revised charge. Kudos to him.
Anybody here shares the same experience?

I think all of the service centres at one point or another seemed to offer dust cleaning for free. Then a lot of kan cheong spider Singaporeans kept going down and begging them to clean clean clean clean clean until they started charging. I could be wrong. I am quite sure Canon at least offered it for free in the past as long as the camera was under warranty.

Btw, dust resistant doesn't mean no dust... What the dust resistance is talking about is that you should expect to still be able to operate your camera reasonably well under dusty conditions. Think Afghanistan, think the desert. Don't think the dust resistance refers to "DSLR being dust free" - that's impossible. If you know how the sensor attracts dust when it is charged, it would be hard for any DSLR producer to make such a claim. Sealed cameras also have problems with dust at times, let alone DSLRs.

Well, gotten back my body last week. They Actually took out the bug already, sadly did not return the bug to me. But they return my camera with damn dirty viewfinder, with lots of stain and black dots. Feedback to them, they took my camera back into that technician room and I waiting for another 10mins, came back with a brand new viewfinder and the lady told me need to wait as they changing the view finder right now. Luckily they did not charge me for that. Haha.
Well, got back my clean camera is a happy enough for me though, don't meant to say that dust resistance is dust proof, but kinda of funny is that my shutter count is only 5k and only got it for less then 7 months bug already getting in, I believe it already make ppl not trusting their dust seal and stuffs, just imagine what will happen 3 years later, infested by bug?
Well, just sharing. Good thing is that my camera is back clean!

Hmm... strange i just send in my 5D III on 16/7/2012 as there is a tiny particle which is visible when looking into VF and the technical help desk lady bring it in and technician clean it for a good 15mins to remove it, guess what when i ask for the charges it totally FOC, previously a year or so back i also send in my 1Ds II for cleaning with the same issue particles in view finder and they call me back after 45mins saying that they can't remove unless i would like to have my VF change with charges but since it does not affect the image they advice me to think twice and again is FOC. i believe their service is pretty professional and i am a happy customer so far till now. i had been using Pro body and Full Frame DSLRs and this dust and particles issue always haunt me therefore if you love your DSLR you never had choice, service it or bear with it..

Usually, charges will also depend on amount of dismantling needed to access the part to be cleaned. Sometimes dust is just on the surface of focusing screen (no need to dismantle anything), sometimes at the back of the focusing screen (just need to remove focusing screen), sometimes on the pentaprism/penta missor ( a lot of dismantling).

All cameras meet different situations.

If I throw my camera with the body cavity open into a bee hive, suffice to say it will be infested by bees who can't find their way out. :bsmilie:

I have used 4 bodies I think over... 6? years... Never had this problem. 2 of these were not dust resistant. :dunno:

you just suay la.

First, dust is always a problem for DSLR / SLR. As long as you change lenses before, dust/bugs/germs have a chance to enter. I think it is fair for Canon to charge a fee for the service cos is not their fault for letting the bug entering your camera. But do agree that $120 is a bit high. If your PnS camera have bugs then is canon's fault.

I tried so hard explaining about the 7D concept on why i bought it as it is dust and weather seal but they cant seems to understand it. I asked them so does it mean that this was a defect that maybe they did not add the dust seal up so i would want a refund and just buy a 60D they told me it's user problem. The counter people just don't understand that I buy the a 7D because it is dust and water sealed.
Well, paying $60 is so much better then paying $120. So just forget about it already la. Since already sent in to remove "johnny".
The bug is just damn small, maybe just 5mm? just sent in my camera this morning and they told me it should be ready by Wednesday.

So now u know its just a marketing gimmick by canon.....

When they claim it's resistant, what is it based on? What is the benchmark? Resistant by how many % compared to a normal camera body?

Never say, right? Then how do we know how resistant the camera is?

Personally I never believe all these resistance features.

As an ex-1D3 user I can tell you that I shot in the rain many times, the weather-sealed feature gave me confidence to continue shooting to get the shot I want.

A bug may enter the camera chamber in a lot of ways. Maybe it was lurking at the lens rear mount and it got into the camera body when TS attached the lens to the camera body. It may even be possible that the bug was sleeping in the camera body cap... No one knows what and how it happened, but I am pretty sure if there are no way a bug can enter the camera body if TS has not swapped lenses or remove the lens from the camera body.

I won't say this is marketing gimmick though, more like just an odd incident.

How is it possible for a bug to enter the VF? Hmmm... Possible scenarios..?

1) left in a bug habitat swarming with bugs
2) got too close to the subject when doing macro
3) left the camera in an open field for a few hours..?

Poor TS... Hope you get the problem solved soon... but then again, if it's not a huge bug, it should be ok right? It's not stuck to the glass or anything right?

1) impossible
2) I don't shoot macro
3) impossible

Problem solved now. Came back clean, so happy now.

Is it possible to clean the dust in VF by ourselves? Mine got it but I just ignore it for already 1 mth...

Should have tried putting some food for the bug (sugar). then kkep camera and one or two grain of sugar in a container. the bug should work it's way out.
