It's all for real n ppl there in phillipines do it for the purpose of cleansing themselves from sins n evil. There is a program in discovery channel called "TABOO'. Its on every wed or thurs...i cnt rmbr. It's a very good show where u will be able to see lots of weird n unexpected stuff abt other cultures, practices n believes frm all over the world. That includes the crucifixion in phillipines. It all begins with this one man who starts to crucify himself for the whole day on every GOOD FRIDAY,believing that god will cleanse away all his sins n bless him.I EVEN GET TO SEE THE NAILING SCENE...and its damn real. Also ask few frenz who r frm there n they say it's true.

OK. I just asked a Philipino friend.. he confirms that the nailing is for real.. but they will be there for a while only, that same day remove it. Then they recuperate. The nail punctured through the hand can heal quite ok.

Good shots there... This place is a town somewhere in Pampanga province if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks. I don't know that place well, but the town's name is San Fernando (hope I spelled it right) :)

Fengwei, are those really blood? They look like some red coloring that you can put on the wooden whip. Can those blunt wooden whip actually cause bleeding?

Yes, the blood is really of course. I got blood stains on my shirt, camera bag, even my lens and camera. If you want see if the wooden whip can cause bleeding, you can just tap somewhere on your shoulder continuously w/ your other hand, and you'd see the red come out, and the blood will eventually come out :)

The devotees kept whipping at themselves for almost a whole day, and I saw the wound on their backs turned from no blood, to some red, and eventually bleeding ...

 Nice pix

A very good re-anactment of the last hours of Christ up to the cruxifixion. A have not seem anything so real in Sgp

Thanks Vince. For a comparison, I think I like the Thaipusam better :)

wow, very interesting....quite an eye opener....
great documentary shots..

Thanks. It's an interesting event indeed. But our Thaipusam is quite interesting as well imo.

Interesting.

Do they let the people down from the crosses? Or... leave them to die? :O

They'd let the people down in just several minutes after they lifted them up there on the cross, not longer than 10 minutes I think. We stood there for about an hour, and there were totally 15 people were nailed on that three crosses ...

So much blood, so scary.

So much blood, yes. Scary, not really. If you walk around w/ those people, especially those smiling faces around them, I don't think you'd feel scared :) Please see my other threads about the candids and portraits photos I took over there ;)

I've seen pictures of simliar processions like these before. Rest assured the blood is real, so is the crucifixion. The nail through the hand and all... Gory stuff.

Yes, you are right about this.

Thanks for sharing that. It is real, at least from what I saw there.

for wat i noe...they will be hang for the day...i mean not exactly 24hrs but till dusk.

Nope, they'd be hang there for several minutes only ;) I saw some were nailed to the cross, and took off from the air in just 5 minutes.

Thanks for the reconfirmation. Even the wound will heal quite okay, I wouldn't do try that myself. It hurts so much even by thinking of it...

actually before they go out the streets and start whipping their backs... using a razor sharp blade, someone will make small cuts, say 10 cuts on each side of their backs... this is why you see so much blood using blunt wooden whip...

Hmm, that sounds realy hurt ...

i heard also that instead of cutting small wounds one at a time... they have an option of using a paddle with lots of blades embedded on it so that two taps of this paddle will do lots of wound in a matter of second...ouch.....

Well, from what I saw there, it's not the case. I saw their wounds got worse from uncut backs ...

How come they do not bleed from the hands?

How come they do not bleed from the hands?

Probably you need to try it yourself and see why :bsmilie:

Just kidding. Actually there was some minor bleeding after they were took off from the crosses. But I guess the pain is alot bigger deal comparing w/ bleeding.

How come they do not bleed from the hands?

it depends on the area of injury. if it went through the palm at appropriate locations, there will be mostly bones, muscles and tendons. the important thing is not to sever the tendon or the neurovascular bundle. usually injury over there dun bleed that much. but if you try cutting your finger tip, it will ooze for a few hours even with a bandage becos of high concentration of capillaries.

zoosh... you are really well versed in anatomy!

Today was talking to someone at uni, then he started telling me about his experience in Philippines, witnessing these things happen (reminded me of this thread!).

ouch

actually if you have seen guys in the army getting injured, you would also know. those who somehow pierce their palm with their rifle cleaning kit would not bleed much, whereas those who cut their fingers with sharp razor/blades will bleed non-stop.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but haven't been seeing people getting hurt with rifle cleaning kit...so I won't know from army experiences.

But you're right about the hand injury, I'm taking anatomy as a core subject in uni and its true that at a certain part of the palm, piercing it will not damage your tendon and nerves. Piercing will only cause a wound which will be able to heal normally. However, for the finger tip I'm not so certain. Capillaries carry slowing moving blood which is easier to clot than blood vessels transporting faster moving blood like the arteries. I've been cut myself (accidentally of course...) at the finger tips but didn't find it bleeding non-stop.

perhaps. it depends on the depth and the type of laceration. macerated wounds does not bleed as badly as sharp clean deep cuts typically by knifes.

while capillaries have reduced pressure, it depends on the vascularity in that region. i'm comparing by tissue to tissue area. any cut of the main arteries will just spurt with pressure, not ooze.
