...... if i adjust the F, the whole picture becomes dark....

if u adjust the F stop (to a bigger number) the shutter speed slows down accordingly according to the exposure table for a given amount of light metered...... it does not get darker

you must have adjusted the EV+/- compensation instead

dun want to use high iso, dun want flash. Still want deep dof.........

Set to f8 and use a table top tripod lah....

and keep the food farther away from you ....... read up more on DoF to know why
