Strange that no one mentioned anything about 3rd-party accessories :(

cos zen fans got no accessories other than casing to crow about lor :bsmilie: so they quietly ignore the fact the the ipod family can even hook up to bmw and merc controls :D

Er.....We don't use our zen to crow to others.....we USE it.....

Just like we use FM receiver to listen to radio, BUILT-IN(no need to spend more on third party)

thats very good to know indeed. so why the ipod bashing then? ;p

you call this a feature? sounds more liek a limiting factor. after all music files are still files....should be transparent. the more songs you store the less space you have available for files and vice versa. dont need partitioniong to help me do this.

so.....lousy radio? less than 12 hours of battery life? hmm...how does it make it better than an ipod then?
Funny, who's bashing the iPOD??

Nobody says that ipod can't live alongside zen. Zen Micro just have more function and cheaper, that's all....

Our consideration does not value style as high as functionality...

true...but if you take away the radio which as a zen user put is not even as good as a dedicated portable radio (and you know how some of those sound) and 8-9 hour battery life (vs the advertised 12 hours), then what functional advantage does it have over the ipod? the touch pad or whatever thats called loses out the ipod scroll wheel big time in terms of scrolling accuracy and ease of use.

granted that ipod doesnt play wma files which is a microsoft proprietary format and not even a standard, the zen does not even play aac (mpeg4) which is an mpeg standard.

the ipod has a docking port that offers a wider range of expansion - 3rd party sound systems (bmw, mercs, nissan, alfa romeo, jbl, bose, etc) and accessories (in-car chargers, connection to card readers and digital cameras, fm transmitters, voice recorders). the zen is probably restricted to fm transmitters and cassette adapters that plug into its headphone socket.

seems to me ipod is more functional then the zen.

let me correct my earlier post....seems like zen can charge in car too...using usb port ;p

If you add additional cost of the third party accessories, the ipod mini would no longer be in the same price cat. Micro is $449(5GB, radio, line-in recording), Mini is $458(4GB, add the 3 party expansion cost)

To me, it boils down to style vs functionality, which says what kind of personality we are in our choice..... ;)

the mini is already fully functional without 3rd party accessories. it was meant to play music...

hmm...were we still talking about style? :dunno:

aiyo...the zen & the ipod serves diff people with diff needs....

those who want functionality will choose the zen apth
those who perfer a 'lifestyle' brand-name will choose the ipod.

simple as that....no point arguing over which is better; has more functions etc....the debate nvr ends.....at the end of the day, Stevie & Ah Sim could be sipping wine 2gether at some private getaway :bsmilie: :bsmilie: at us....

If u hv the $$$, just get yr preferred player.............no one can change yr mind....

Aaahhhaa a big 'if", a big assumption.....

Okay, gimme justification for it,

Mini vs Micro
$458 vs $449
4GB vs 5GB
none vs Radio
none vs Line-In
Better design vs so-so design
good sound vs best sound (reviewed earlier by jUzMoO)
Solid casing vs good casing (reviewed earlier by jUzMoO)

Let's just say that you have no need for radio, line-in recording etc but wouldn't you want an extra gigbyte of space?? Cheaper price?? Back to the basic of mp3 players, BETTER SOUND??

Or is it just about a killer design?

I am a great admirer of apple design, own a MAC(PowerPC 90mhz) over ten
years ago due to my profession at the time(graphic artist). Arden die hard of mac that time, I switched one year later. Why? Simple, I could do in PC as in Mac the faction of the price. I wish all PC was design like a Mac, simple, elegant, killer looks, but push comes to shove, I value rational functionality and cost over killer looks anytime. As a designer/marketeer, you would think that I'll go with the Mini or Shuffle(Amazing piece of designer gadget), I rather get the one with content.

i think i wanna get micro..
got radio..bigger space...

why not zen touch? 10,000 songs...

i guess design doesnt really matter to me. content is more impt. :)

Heard from a friend it's like S$389+GST at Parisilk (Holland V). Cheapest so far. :)

Regards
CK

Hommie, are you trying to justify the iPod Mini's awful design? According to a poll/survey conducted by our local university (Can't name), tons of people, equal number of male and females consider the iPod mini design a huge letdown due to the curved sides, which I agree. The iPod definitely looks good, but the mini looks awful.

The micro definitely doesn't look awesome, but the mini seriously disappoints in looks. As for the shuffle? I seriously have no idea how people justify its cost because of its "design". It looks no different from a damn thumbdrive with MP3 function, and it looks like a big fishcake to me. Maybe if it had a small decent LCD screen, it would have been a better product. Also please don't talk about the "minimalist" look, because it doesn't justify the price.
