using the custom shape tool will definitely work..
or pasting from the other applications (including the CharacterMap) will also most likely to work.

but I wonder what is the cause of his problem here..its just interesting.
Seems like its something wrong with his Photoshop Settings, (assuming from the fact that he could create © by pressing ALT+0169 in MsWord using the same font.)

Have tried most of the methods but still doesn't solve the problem.sigh.....

Maybe try to re-install PS again one of this day, Meanwhile just copied from MS Word.
