an analogy:

a beggar on the street approaches you and says that he is very poor and needs money badly to feed his family of 10. out of pity, you give him $20, thinking that each of his 10 children will have $2 for a meal that day. but you are interested to see what happens next. so, you secretly follow the beggar, only to discover to your disgust that he is not only able-bodied, but went to the nearest pub and spent $10 without batting an eyelid on getting himself drunk on the most expensive beer in the house. after that, the beggar went back to his street corner to tell his sob story to another passer-by.

I have had this 'analogy' happen to me before, only instead of beer, it was cigs. So now, when ever I am approached by these beggers, I usually invite them for a meal at the nearest hawker centers and offer to buy them a meal. Many times those who actually hope for a quick buck will just wave an abusive finger at me and walk off to their next target, while the probably genuine ones accept the offer with grace. After the meal, I usually offer a small amount of about $10-20. I say probably because I did not eventually follow them to confirm if they actually did not abuse the trust.
Another incident was that the extra packet I bought for the man was promptly given away to another person. But to be fair, he could have been paying it forward, I don't know. Only God does.

Well,
I for one still doesn't think that TT Durai was overpaid. One should not throw the baby out with the bathwater. If the NKF were indeed not 'corporatised', would they be able to operate on the scale that they have? I seriously doubt it.
What troubles me most are all the small little perks that he liked to give himself, or have the board give him, all of which he could have easily afforded. To me, this was a sure sign he had become addicted to the position of his office. The other troubling thing was the lack of corporate governance. As with a lot of companies who's founder is the CEO, particularly those with strong personalities, the board fails to do its job properly and rein in excesses.
That the presnt board and the CEO had to leave is clear. However, if they paid the next CEO the equivalent of the present one, it wouldn't trouble me one bit.
On a side note; the fact that they had failed to foresee the potential PR fallout from commencing the suit must rank as one of the worst misjudgements in history. This was a mighty gigantic own goal they scored.

I don't think he was that overpaid either (though they could have structured the pay package better), BUT NKF hasn't used the funds very well, particularly in amount reaching beneficiaries, who still had to fork out 2/3 of costs. Also over estimating the number of patients served by 50%? That's quite ridiculous.

Not sure exactly what's the point of 'hoarding' such reserves either. Suddenly a mass kidney disease outbreak? Even then, you still needed to earn a certain amount to be able to afford NKF's 'services'.

I have no quarrel with his monthly pay but drawing 12 months bonuses for the past three years from donors money is obscene. Remember, we had a recession 2 - 3 years back and many of us have friends or relatives who got retrenched and have had trouble finding another job. Those who are lucky to retain their job had to take a salary cut let alone receiving year end bonus. Ppl who wants to take on such a post should not harbour the notion of drawing 12 months bonuses and at the same time the board should not overgenerous with donors' money. To me, 3 months bonuses is good enough - better than most civil servants and those in the private sector. Afterall, this is a charity org and not a MNC.

understatement of the year!!!

but actually, "they" might not have known the potential backlash... whereas, "he" might have. in other words, the depts fronting the organisation for the trial might not have had all the nec information (mkt price of peanuts, price inflation of toilets, etc) when preparing the risk management analysis.

In the 1st place , do they need to be operating in that 282 million reserve scale ?? The maths done by Mr.Davinder Singh, suggested that they are operating on a 7 million defict yearly. If they maintain a 10 year reserve of 70 million. Does the NKF need a 600k man to helm their fat bank acc ?

TO me , very simple .

Durai mission
1) Collect as much reserve as possible , even though I may or may not present the actual facts to the public.

2) Justifiy my pay/bonus in relation with the reserve accumulated.

lately he is venturing into the suing games, he believe that he will win every games.

many might not remember the property case, and how that poor lady cried.

lessons we can learn from the case.....

"what goes round, comes round"

"pride goes before a fall"

"the love of money is the root of all evil"

Personally, If I'm thick skin, I don't care anymore. I got enough money to anonymously retire to some exotic place by the beach with lots of bikini babes and occasionally watch CNA and have a few laugh (with the bikini babes)... and just for kicks, I might even send espn a D2X... of course that's just me... *evil gleam*

I understand that he was a good hands-on volunteer in the early years, and people who worked with him acknowledged his tireless efforts to get more people to donate... and donate... Then the NKF coffers swelled, and he crossed over to the Dark Side... ;p

wow this thread is even faster than the Sentosa thread... are you guys going to start a

Consolidated NKF Thread - Pt 2 Attack of the Donors
Consolidated NKF Thread - Pt 3 Revenge of the CEO

so this thread should be named Pt 1 The CEO Menace

Petition for an "Enquiry on NKF" sounds more interesting.

most likely there will be a committee of enquiry into NKF. this sordid affair has blighted singapore's good name, and i'm sure LHL and his team will want to punish any wrongdoers, and to seek redress for singaporeans.

you really think so? Heresay is that a number of ppl in high places have their hands in the honeypot, so no such enquiry will be done, or if there is one, it will die a quick death

the fact that you mentioned this "hearsay" is all the more reason the government has to step in decisively and quickly now to reaffirm singapore's image as a clean and transparent country to the rest of the world. furthermore, it is a very serious and unusual matter to have this level of civil unrest in singapore (e.g. the possibility of a protest march). the government must restore confidence both at home and abroad.

SINGAPORE : The Health Minister has named Mr Gerard Ee as interim chairman of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).

Mr Ee is currently the President of the National Council of Social Service (NCSS).

He is also a member of the Council on Governance of the Institutes of Public Character. - CNA/de
