comparison between canon 550d and 600d

thanks pal. cus sometime got this kind of promotion for this particular lens purchase with purchase. so i read through last year canon promotion on IT show, and they have this canon EF 18-250 IS lens with purchase for $200 plus. hahax.

and one thing i heard is that, correct me if i'm wrong, for nikon wise, if got example you have D3100 DSLR, you only can buy D3100 lens to replace it, you can't buy any other nikon model like D3000 len for the D3100 camera. as for canon, you can use other lens model of canon camera like 600d onto a 550d camera. am i right?

Does it even make sense for Nikon to do that? Like what Rashkae said, please read more and don't assume.

As what Rashkae had says... in actual fact, you can use any lens on Nikon... as long as the mount is correct.

For Canon not counting third party lenses, you have basically 2 mounts - EF and EF-S. EF lens can be use for Canon's FF camera, APS-C and APS-H camera while the EF-S lenses can only be use for Canon's APS-C (crop camera). So in a sense, Canon impose more restriction to their camera models.

Before you ask the next question on what is FF, APS-C and APS-H camera, it was basically,

In Canon's Context:

FF - Full Frame
APS-C - Cropped Frame (x1.6 crop factor, for other models like Nikon, Pentax and Sony, they have a crop factor of x1.5)
APS-H - another crop frame sensor but bigger than APS-C (x1.3)

In Canon's lineup (at time of writing),

FF - 1Ds, 5DmkII
APS-C - xxxD (300D, 350D, 450D,500D,550D,600D, etc), xxxxD (1000D, 1100D), xxD (50D,60D, etc), xD (at present moment, 7D is the only xD model with APS-C sensor)
APS-H - 1D

As to Nikon, all their lenses can be interchange and interuse with all their models, even those lenses designed specifically for cropped frame camera. When used on FF, there will be vignetting at the corners, but it is still usable. For canon, you cannot fit the EF-S lens into the FF and APS-H camera at all, so in a sense, Nikon is more flexible.

Btw, for 550d and 600d, other than rotating lcd and manual audio control on 600d, there is also wireless flash commander built in.

Means 600d can control slave wireless flashguns while 550d cant unless using a dedicated device from canon or 3rd party.

To TS. Since you are already looking at Nikon too. I might suggest that you looked at other brands of camera as well... such as Pentax and Sony. Both of them made excellent camera... that are affordable and have great lineup of accessories as well as lenses (although many reviews had stated that Pentax do not have as much lens as Canon, but in real life, you do not need hundreds of lens lineup, afterall you are not going to get every single one of them )

Also make sure that you take a look at the great selection of mirrorless cameras too. Depending on what you want to shoot, mirrorless camera are great alternative if you want something lighter and not too bulky. Selection of mirrorless cameras,

Olympus Pen-series (I personally owned a EP-L1, excellent little gem, but not the fastest you can find and the dedicated video button is located in a position that is pretty annoying because my big thumb keep pressing it accidentally).

Panasonic - GH and G series mirrorless camera. Very nice layout and excellent image quality too.

Samsung - NX series (many would have swear by it. But I personally didn't have any experience in it).

Also looked at Sony's NEX series, A55 and A33 camera (the latter are SLT technology) which is easy to use and insanely fast. They took quality pics too.

The above mentioned mirrorless and SLT cameras all have movie mode too and took quite good movie clips.

So there you have it... more things to ponder about.

Did you go to the Nikon website and see a whole section on "D3000 lenses" and "D3100 lenses"? No, right?

i've just check with some outlet that Price Guide introduced, and following are the prices.

Canon 550D Kit I...

1. MS colour (main and amk hub) = $1060 with 8GB memory card and camera bag.
2. AP (funan) = $1060 with 8GB memory card and camer bag.
3. CP (marina square) = $1120 with 8GB memory card, camer bag, user guide and 55-250 lens for $299 with purchase.
4. OP = $1080 with 8GB memory card and camera bag.

Well... since you already got the reply from those stores, you can approach them and see if they give you any other freebies (but frankly, I wouldn't bother with freebies, they are cheap and basically almost quite useless). Forget about tripod, the free tripods are a waste of time.

Also be sure to look at Canon's website to check what other items will be included in any sales.

He means... the tripod any shops give you free is a piece of crap. Look at it this way, a decent tripod with a ballhead would easily cost up to around S$200... how could any shops give you free a decent tripod? But first polish up your skills (holding the camera, shooting, composition, etc) before you move up to other things. Tripod is a must in many shooting situations... but until then, good holding, shooting and breathing techniques could get you pass most situation.

Camera bag is usually given as part of the promotion Canon give. So you do not need to worry about it. Unless your lens grew bigger or more and you have more and more equipment, then you would need to upgrade your bag.

For me, I usually use a simple sling bag, wrap my camera in towels and get some foams for cushions for my bag. It cost less than $30. That is until I bought my new 7D and Canon give me a very good camera bag. As to lens cap... well... it came with your lens, you don't have to buy, unless you lost it... but you can get 1 for around $2 from e-bay. Remote control is also not very expensive, especially the third party one (not sure how much) but I believe it to be not more than $20.

What you might want to invest though is a good dry cabinet that can cost up to around $200 or $1xx (for a small one).

Extra battery cost around S$20++ piece for third party ones (hercules brand - get from sgcamera, near Funan).

User Guide - will give it to you together with the set. If you lost it, you can easily download a copy from the website. I have downloaded all of my user guides.

Tripod - there are basically two type of tripods, carbon fibre and aluminium alloy. Carbon fibres ones are very light but very expensive... aluminium alloy ones (with equivalent maximum load) is heavier but much lighter. The more popular brands are Sirui (pretty cheap), manfrotto, Benro, Vanguard and Gitto (the most expensive in the range).

Canon will normally give you the bag (so no worry here). If not, read my other thread and DIY your own bag with your existing bag until you have the $$ to buy a new one.

- Dry Cabinet.
This is almost a must, unless you can stand changing/monitoring silica gel every few days or every week with a dry box. Cheapest at ~100+ (check out digi cabi 036L, you can also find it in NTUC extra)

thanks for the clarification. but am i right to see if 550d cost $1199 with a free tripod and/or dry cabinet is more worth it compare to a 550d cost $1060, if let said the tripod cheapest is $100.
