read something like this, but slightly different. the explanation is that they don't want to damp the mirror and reduce the sound, because this transfers the vibration to the body and sensor, and affects the working of the anti-shake. true or not i dunno lah.

i doubt it, otherwise nikon, canon and others would have done the same and then anti-shake or sss would not be a unique feature. ;)

sorry, don't get it

what i meant was nikon, canon and others will also not dampen their mirrors and reduce vibrations, then KM's AS/ SSS won't be unique because these other manufacturers will also have reduced vibration.

oh. maybe i wasn't clear enough in my post. the AS/SSS system isn't based on having a loud mirror, or not damping the mirror slap. it's based on moving the sensor. but in one interview, a sony rep said that damping the mirror slap transfers additional vibrations *that interfere* with the AS/SSS.

Those brands with in-lens stabilizations will not be affected by vibrations to the body cos the image is steadied away from the body. The problem is unique to KM's AS or now called SSS cos the image is damped in the body.

Hiee Pals...

Mirror flip damping is it self a whole world of its own.
So Far, only high end Pro camera offer Mirror Lock-up (Usually lever activated mirror lock up)
for optimised sharpness (letting the camera flip the mirror up and then allow the shutter curtain to open without having to be haunted by vibrations from mirror flipping action.
Use long lens and you know why you might need them.

Example shot, using mirror lockup(2sec). My friend who runs on the canon system who did not offer the mirror lock up had problem getting this image sharp.

- i had AS turned off BTW. If i dont use mirror lock up - the image will be blurred due to mirror flip.

KMinolta offer the 2sec mirror flip confidently (since Dynax 7 days) - and i swear by it.
It really works. Confidently they provide this function as they know their system (intenals) would have really "silent" for the shot - able to dissipate all stry vibraitons for minimal vibration just within this 2sec timing window.

Mirror flap - sound as we all now is energy. It have to go somewhere. If you dampen the sound, it will go to your internals. I'm not surprise, if the Sony person gave the reason as such: (well its just claims.....)

so many alpha threads now, dun know where to post.

anyway, i dun know if any of you noticed this, but i found that all the lenses(exclude CZ) at the sony show seemed to be made in china.

checked my 28 minolta prime, has "Japan" under it.

The kit lens that came with the KM5D is "Made In China" as well. Similarly for the KM 28-75 f2.8..."Made In China". Nothing wrong with it as long as the QC is good. :)

I 2nd this, mirror lock up is definitely needed for sharpness in long lens  .

kinda agree here. things are constantly changing and new models are emerging... no consumer will stick to something for more than 2 years.

My D100 has been faithfully serving me from Sept 2002!!!:bsmilie: Didn't see the point to upgrade:nono:

Same here.. my D7D is about 18 months old now... don't expect to change one within 1 year time... hehe, because I don't have enough $$$... :bsmilie:

Still waiting for Sony Full frame DSLR (yes I am dreaming, but It will be sooner than I thought).

body is made in malaysia.
is that why it is cheaper in Malaysia ?

Maybe ....... but I don't think so ......... cheaper because the market is bigger and the overheads are lowered ......... :)

I dun intend to upgrade for the foreseeable future... until my 7D dies or obsolescence sets in... might end up skipping 1-2 generations... kekeke...

Since the ccd does the antishaking, won't looking thru the viewfinder using macro or tele still yield the shakes? Even though the end result is a sharp shot, but I think I may find it annoying just looking thru the lens.
