I agree.
I took a Powershot G11 to the Negev Desert in Israel last spring. Despite being very careful, few grains of sand ruined the focusing mechanism rendering the camera null and void. This is one reason why I kept my 5D3 safely at home... and in retrospect, I'm so glad that I did.
The estimated bill was too high to justify repair and I therefore bought a new G15 to replace the defunct G11. This is a very expensive hobby. If this had happened to a US$799 G1X II, I would have felt even worse. In two or three years, the same camera will be available on the 'slightly' used market for less than half the price. IMO it is best to wait.

I was considering an all weather camera for those underwater, and sport, and use as a pns... or a mirrorless... have not decided...
If go desert, better dun change lens (DSLR).... will be crazy to!!!

Yes, that's part of the reason why I left my DSLR at home. I'm not sure how much I paid for the G11... I got it brand new at a discounted price well after the G12 came to market. I think it was C$350 and the repair would have cost almost as much!

Er... no...
Try getting a DSLR with equivalent lens, 24-120 (if I am not wrong) and see if which one is more expensive. You must compare apple to apple, instead of using a DSLR body with small cheapo kit lens then say that the G1X mk II is more expensive.
And... do note that the famed Sony RX100II is also selling at a price that is significantly more expensive as compared to a DSLR with kit lens... so there really is nothing wrong with the pricing of the G1X II as long as it performed as promise by Canon.

Ha ha, you are also have a point but these kind of things hard to compare apple to apple, since sensor size different, cannot change lens etc.
But if are happy to pay the price then good for you.

my g1x died in korea in dec from a crash....now mark ii is out... deciding between this or eos m2. The price is ok against other big sensor compacts...shall wait for reviews.

You forget that using the same EF mount as the Canon DSLR bodies would remove all the benefits of a mirrorless system
Never mind if it is thicker body and bigger. Who cares? No need to buy lenses if one has lots of EOS full frame lenses and lots of legacy Leica + Contax glass (used with adapter to EF mount).
A friend with lots of Conorus converted AF Carl Zeiss N lenses to EF mount is looking for such a full frame mirrorless body with EF mount from Canon.
If Nikon can make a DF body for people who have legacy Nikkors, then Canon can make this full frame mirrorless with EF mount.

I agree with you, rhino123, and I believe your point extends beyond the context of pricing.
First of all, this camera is definitely not for those whose creative requirements can only be sated by interchanging several lenses. For them, the wide range of mirrorless choices should fit their requirements very well.
For those like me, who are looking for a large sensor camera and a pancake type zoom lens that extends beyond 18-55(ish) range - Something I can just bring with me for a holiday or business trip - There is no better option.
Well, there is another option as you have mentioned - the RX100 MII. I stopped short of buying the RX100 MII because at tele (f4.9), it is actually 1.5 stop slower than the G15 at tele (f2.8). This means it has to go to ISO 1200 to match ISO 400 on my G15 at the same shutter speed/aperture which neutralizes some of the advantages its larger sensor. With an even bigger sensor and a brighter, more versatile lens (vs RX100 II) and a short focus distance, the G1X Mark II makes a worthy replacement for my G15.
It would remain a great option for me until a mirrorless vendor manages to come up with a decent pancake zoom lens that gives me better range and speed than 24-120mm (equiv.) f2.0-f3.9.
Again, as you have mentioned, all this would only be true should the lens/sensor on G1X Mark II prove to be of decent quality.
