Hi folks,

For the short term we would be focusing on pros, but in the longer term definitely we won't leave the enthusiast out. There's a learning curve ahead of us, and we would like to build on our initial experience to eventually support the enthusiast. I hope this will happen sonner than later (Winson, you hear me? ;)).

I will be collating the contacts of those who expressed interest and sending out invitations by next week. The factory visits will start in early August, one session every Monday evening.

Thanks everybody for the support. It has been very encouraging.

Hi Mike,

I've contacted Winson abt the coffee-table books proposal and am very interested as i'm a wedding photographer. My approach is more towards to a B2B aspect so pls keep me in the loop via poise.inc@gmail.com or sms me at 92292069:)

Thanks and rgds,
Khai

just a quick question... is it possible to print full bleed (edge to edge)? some online printing services do not allow that for their photobooks.

regards

Yes, there's the ability to print full bleed. This ability is indeed lacking in various online consumer coffeetable photo book printing services.

Hi,

I would like to visit the factory as well. Do keep me in the loop on the time and location. thanks!

1. will it have a uv coat fininshing.

2. does the layout required 3mm bleed?

3. 40 pages? does it mean 20pp?

This is a good forum for feedback and technical questions. It would help us to compile a list of Q&A and. address concerns and ideas to improve our offerings.

1. No U.V., as the treatment emit an odour that’s quite unbearable for some. The chemical reaction released ozone into the atmosphere (not environment friendly). Anyway, a coffee table book must look and feel like one. No vanishes, no lamination, just offset ink print on paper. (we can do it at as an additional cost if you insist:( )

2. We have standardised the layout template for you to design accordingly to ensure page accuracy. We maximize the paper usage and minimise wastages.
For example:
Paper size – 12.5” X 18” (max)
Print size – 12.125” X 17.75 (max)
Trim size - 12” X 17.5
On trimmed-off, the images can full bleed to the edge, very marginal bleed allowance of 1mm is needed. Confidence and precision in technology is important too.

3. In technical or short term, pp is paginated pages. 40 pages as in 40 printed pages, total 20 sheets of paper printed on both-sides.

The sizes are final, standard 40 pages for content.
1) Grand - 12.25" X 17.75" (landscape or portrait)
2) Classic - 8.5" X 12.25" ( " )
3) Pocket - 4.25" X 6.125" ( " )
4) Square – 12.25” X 12.25”
5) - 8.75” X 8.75”
6) - 5.75” X 5.75”

From 1 design submission, we can produce a whole set of 3 sizes. Simply by designing it on the biggest size and we will scale down to the smaller size and smallest. Saved on the need to design on different size and format.

Keep your questions coming; we’ll be able to fine-tune our work.

Cheers

Winson

When can you take in order?

For professionals, we’re ready now. For consumers, we’re looking for partners to help sell this service.
There are few enquiries, but limited to the know-how and the ability to service and support.

I would not be taking order from this forum, I started this thread as a research to test the interests and responses from professionals. So far the responses are great.

The initial soft launch to professionals and wedding photographers had a lot to do with Mike Lee, his enthusiasms and his offer to help in this segment. He’ll be taking orders from professionals, not me.

We have been selling offset printing for 18 years, and high-end digital printing service for the last 6 years.
Mainly on B2B transaction, serving publishers, design and ad agencies in the region.
The production of coffee table books had started a few years and ondemand, short-run coffee table books for 1 year (B2B for USA and Europe)

There are offers for us to license software by ASPs for photo book design and sell it on the internet, we’ve not taken up due to conflict of interest and we rather be a very good production trade-shop. For enterprising and serious interests, PM me and I’ll refer them to you.;p

Regards

Winson

hi, cya guys on 7th aug. will be keen to see the product before making any assessment.;)

Dear Winson,

Thank you for the invitation ... I've replied to your PM.

Warm regards,

The overwhelming responses to attend the “factory visit” had packed the first and second Monday evenings.
The 3rd and 4th event on 21st and 28th Aug is filling up fast.
We had also increased the numbers from 8-10 visitors to 12 per session.

Mike had sent out quite a number of invitations.
If you had indicated your interest to attend, and have not received the info by now, pls PM Mike at igpenguin.

If the interests are still good, we’ll stretch over to Sept, we’re also thinking of organizing some “How to” events in the near future like:
1) How to design a Coffee Table Book or a Portfolio?
2) How to up-sell with Coffee Table Books in your packages?
3) How to “back-sell” to your old clienteles? On Anniversaries, Babies, Birthday, etc.
4) Any others issue that’s needed for the business, we’re looking for volunteers and specialists, sponsors to cover these topics.

There’re requests for design and layout services from photographers and there’re offering of such services from designers.
We’ll try to match-make and perhaps create a “marketplace” for these requirements.

Looking forward to meet some of you in person on your visit.

Kind regards

Winson Lan

The 4th and last event on 28th Aug is filling up fast, with a couple of seats left.

We've great feedbacks and ideas from all the participates on the first Monday visit on 7th Aug. It'll be complied with the next few visits' feedback and incorporated into our offerings.

With about 50 Professional and Wedding Photoghrapers to work with, we'll stop at 4 visits.
Thank you for the interests and support.

The last factory visit on next Monday, 28th August is over-filled. Apologies to those whom had got to know this late and missed it, we’ll plan for other event in Oct.

We do not design or provide montage service. We just check the incoming files are in “print ready” condition and process the order to print. All files coming from professionals are deemed good and we do not even contact them unless there is an issue.

It’s been fun doing this events and getting to know all the pros.

I am interested in both the coffee book printing as well as designing.. Anybody that you could refer me to for the designing?

I have a few question prior to my factory visit on Sep 2 (Sat) after coming back from Vietnam:

1. RGB-to-CMYK conversion, who will handle this process? The photographer or the in-house designer?
2. How to do press check? Will a digital proof be given?
3. If providing files in RGB, is aRGB or sRGB preferred?
4. Other than JPEG files, can the printer take Mac version Pagemaker files (with links to high res JPEGs) for eg?
5. Will the printer's color profiles be provided to the photographer for colour editing?
