what about colour profile for the prints? sRGB?

Printer come in CYMK so i think all artwork should been done in CYMK unless you want to post the photography in the internet.

Something we can discussion during our coffee session this friday.

I have a few question prior to my factory visit on Sep 2 (Sat) after coming back from Vietnam:

1. RGB-to-CMYK conversion, who will handle this process? The photographer or the in-house designer?
2. How to do press check? Will a digital proof be given?
3. If providing files in RGB, is aRGB or sRGB preferred?
4. Other than JPEG files, can the printer take Mac version Pagemaker files (with links to high res JPEGs) for eg?
5. Will the printer's color profiles be provided to the photographer for colour editing?

1. RGB-to-CMYK conversion, who will handle this process? The photographer or the in-house designer?
Most photogs worked with PS and saved to JPEG. We’ll convert to CMYK and RIP to print, although we would prefer to receive “print ready files”.

2. How to do press check? Will a digital proof be given?
Sorry, no press check or proof will be allowed, as we’ll be printing 1 copy and the actual book. As professionalism counts in this instance, you must know what you’re doing.

3. If providing files in RGB, is aRGB or sRGB preferred?
No difference as far as we are concerned, what matter is which color space you are comfortable working with. (aRGB, eRGB, sRGB, scRGB, etc)

4. Other than JPEG files, can the printer take Mac version Pagemaker files (with links to high res JPEGs) for eg?
Yes, any print ready files. Freehand, Quark, TIFF, etc,. Mac or Win format.

5. Will the printer's color profiles be provided to the photographer for colour editing?
Not necessary, unless you are working in CMYK space. You can edit in RGB and we’ll convert it.

6. Would it be WYSIWYG (wat u see is what u get) from my PSD/JPG files? Meaning the layout, background is exactly the way I want it?
Age old question, NO. Unless you are using professional monitors that are a few thousands dollars and is an expert in color calibration and profiling.

Important note:
It’s a mis-conception on ICC profiles to convert RGB to CMYK. What’s important is the input profiles and output profiles. In other word, your shots captured are based on or using RGB profiled cameras, the monitor that you’re editing on is also using RGB profile (both devices are calibrated), but the output device is CMYK profile. Get your RGB right and we’ll interpolate it to CMYK profile color space for printing. For experts, understanding CMM is key.

I've added No 6 as it's been PM to me a couple of times, and the note.
Hope this reply addressed your concern.

Cheers

Thank you for testing on my German:embrass:
There's this linen cover with printed pic pasted on the cover, and a couple of smaller books with printed hard and soft covers.
YES, we can print covers for smaller sizes (see #49, pg 3 on this thread). For larger books, we can print jackets and even slipcase.

Cheers

Thanksfor addressing my concerns, winson.

I have often been let down by the RGB-to-CMYK conversion. The resulting CMYK output is usually "flat" even though my RGB prints are nicely saturated and I have clearly defined 0 to 255 values (on RGB).

So am I right to say, if I enclose a small 4R print (printed from lab using sRGB workspace) together with my files, u can accurate print with similar results on CMYK using my sample 4R print as a "target" proof?

The question is, can you trust your 4R print?
It could be processed at the weakest strength of the chemical, humidity and temperature would also make a difference.

It’s not whether we can match your “proof”, but rather is your softcopy or hardcopies conforming to offset standard or color balance. We match to Japan Color and GRACol. reference.

We can print as good as your quality, or as bad as your mistake. Not much better, not worst. Many of our Advertising clients “hope” we can print better, we rarely disappoint them. We do perform miracle occassionally.:bsmilie:

Im also looking for more options. this sounds great. Are there any more space left for 2 ppl?

WOW! We had “factory visits” over the last 4 Monday evenings, with about 65 pros attended (and a couple of enthusiasts that managed to sip thru). I hope those whom had the pricelist do not publish the prices or talk about it on any forum. Pls respect our B2B business model.
Briefs
1) Attendees were given a brief tour of the sweat-shop  (facilities),
2) Touch and feel of the printed products,
3) Briefing of job order submission,
4) Given a pricelist and offered of discounts (on the first lot of samples to be printed)
5) Discussions on ideas, design, production, materials, quality, pricing and a long wish list. (We’ll modify our offering, adopt some of the ideas and make it available on our website soon)
6) We never end at 8.30PM, every sessions ended way passed 10PM.

I hoped those whom attended had fun (funds too:devil: ), insights of the new possibilities, technologies, threats and opportunities out there. And established some friendships too.

Those whom had filled up the Registration Form would be notified when the secured “Partners’ Access” on our website is ready. New offerings, info, tips, templates would be available for downloads soon. Struggling to get everything together.

Well-wishes, good words and encouragements are really appreciated. We’ll hold you to all those promises of business too.:)

thanx winson for your time and effort, this is something i would definitely explore with my customers. :)

no lar don't like that say.. the other nite kuang and the others went.. they are the real shifus!!

i can say i like the concept very much - a true "magazine book", and will be trying to sell it to the customers. eventually they will decide how many books i get you to make per year. now i'm actually trying to get a couple of samples done, without them i cannot sell anything. :)

enthusiats were at the walk through ???? was there any during our session ?? :bsmilie:

jOho is our idol la.... aiyoh... :bsmilie:

Thanks, winson, for being so accommodating during our visit. Apologies for the rush as some of our members had a plane to catch. :)

Hi Pete,

It was a great pleasure (pressure too:sweat: ) hosting you and your group’s visit. The waves of questions and enthusiasm are overwhelming. Thank goodness I’ve a bit of technical background, hopefully did not embarrass you. Must have back-up the next time when “heavy-weights” are visiting.

I’ve found the various “factory visits” to be equally pressured as working with professionals are very challenging. Really kept me on my toes, I hope that all the visitors to our facilities have come to understand the possibilities, and the confidence in our abilities in quality and deliveries. Jointly identify the various opportunities out there and let’s make some monies.:bsmilie:

Check this out. We can personalise our photobook with our favourite pictures and bind them in hard covers. All of which will be professionally printed on photo paper.

athlete: you might want to start a new thread, not very nice to hijack people's thread like that.

I knew the twin brothers from Fotohub for many years. Eric was with me in Cologne last week; we have been doing some work for each other. We’re not competing in the same market; our product offerings are different. Their Photo Albums for high-end consumers and our printed coffee table books for professionals. I would encourage end-users to go to their retail outlets, as we are strictly B2B.

I had an email asking why I’ve been so quiet and are we still providing printing services for Pros. I’ve been away in Europe, attending training and visiting Photokina. Will write more when I’ve some time later.
