I agree with harnamsc.

If you or your friend have been in Australia long enough, you would know of her many rip-offs from bricks and mortar stores. Shop online, and it's cheaper to buy from overseas even with postage. It's also not bad an idea buying second hand cameras and flashes from EBay. Avoid buying second hand lenses.

Besides online, as the bros here already suggested, you can buy from the local shops Ted's or Michael's here in Melbourne, but as the bros already said, the prices are not competitive, but heck these guys need to make a living too. Don't forget, local Olympus and Nikon DSLR's come with 2 year Australia warranty.

Hello John,

You don't need to have a job to migrate here, but of course after getting here you definitely do need a job unless you have a few $millions to spare. They have updated the Skills list under the Skilled migration scheme. Take a look and if you have the skills that are in demand here, you can apply for VISA even without any company sponsorship, and while you are still outside. Good luck.

The "work permit" for foreigners is the work visa subclass 457 (remember and mention this 3-digit number). Australian employers bring in foreign workers using this visa 457. If I'm not mistaken, it is the employers who apply this visa for the successfully-hired foreign worker, or otherwise, the worker can only apply for this visa 457 when employment has been confirmed. Just like in Singapore, there are conditions/restrictions for employers on hiring foreigners on visa 457.

harnamsc said it right that most employers will first find workers from the on-shore (in Australia) population because off-shore talent requires jumping through immigration red-tape.

Over the past decade, Australia's immigration intake of skilled migrants with Australian degrees/diplomas, mostly on-shore applications but some off-shore applicants, has risen a lot. The immigration rules and quota chganges every financial year, and sometimes mid-year, and is very hard to stay updated on the immigration rule changes. The frequent change is the probably the primary reason why many foreign students end up wasting lots of $$$ and fail to qualify for Australian PR after graduating from their Australian university course.

You should search for migration agents in Singapore for the most updated advice. All legitimate migration agents in Australia have a MARN (licence) number displayed with their business posters/adverts. I would think they must also have MARN numbers if they operate out of Australia.

I bought my 50D from JB Hi-Fi in the city, pretty good. The trick to buying from big stores, is always to price match.

The other folks have given their two bits, so I won't rehash things. I was on a 457 work visa for the past few years, and I got mine because I did part-time work and got to know people during my first year here.

I won't say it's impossible to get a 457 before you get over here. My friend was with Accenture Singapore, and he got his 457 from them, being internally transferred over to Accenture Melbourne. But to do it via a recruiter, you do have to be pretty specialised! Good luck with the job hunt, I hope something turns up for you.

Ah heck, there IS a shortage of IT System Engineers here anyway. Even with the global downturn, the job market for IT System Engineers hasn't been affected much. But I'm surprised that they mentioned Network though, last I heard there were too many CISCO certified engineers in Australia, to the point that CCIE holders are vying for job requiring only CCNP. Though I should mentioned that although I got this snippet of information from some Hays Recruitment consultants, this information is a year old.

They will make it easier to apply for a Work Permit, but they will cease the PR application process completely and instead change it to 'invitation only'? Hmmmm....that means it will not be that transparent and free for all anymore. They can pick and choose who they want to give PRs to, and naturally that means only those who are gainfully employed will be picked, or rather, "invited". That will certainly get rid of the "free loaders" who are straining the welfare system.

But that will not stop people coming in boats who will basically get a free ticket to earthly heaven (Australia) if they survived the trip, or to the real heaven, if they don't survive.

The latest Consolidated Sponsored Occupations List for people with certain occupations to work under visa 457 has just been released in late June. The list includes some occupations that were previously not in, such as property and insurance professionals, defence officers, flight attendants, driving instructors, kennel and cattery operators, etc.

Not like in the past, they cannot on their own free will submit a PR application to the Dept of Immigration. Now they must first submit an EOI to indicate their interest in applying for PR. The department decides if their occupation is still in shortage based on their quota and whether or not they are good enough by merit to be granted PR. This EOI process will be a more effective weeding/culling method than before.

Now that you mention it? Mostly likely actually.................cos they're demanding CCNP with 7-8 years experience in global or large-scale networks. I mean SERIOUSLY?!? With THAT much experience you're already a CCIE equivalent. Just because due to minimum wage CCNP earns 80K per annum while CCIE earns 120K per annum. Talk about unfair practices!

If I'm not mistaken, the EOI is applicable to anyone who apply independently.. as in without any kind of sponsorship from employer, state government.

Besides GOR & Phillip Island is there any noteworthy sights/activities around Melbourne city that you would recommend? Trying to not rent a car as far as possible.
