Club $1 - on Canon Equipment.

Aiyah...

People who got money, let them buy equipment and talk about it loh. Some are just collectors. Some are collectors who are also good photographers. And there are some very good photographers who are also collectors. So, why get so bothered with what others do or say?

If you cannot afford, work with what you have. You can still make good pictures if you put your heart and mind to it.

What others do or say has no bearing on your own journey in photography.

Not that I’m necessarily bothered personally. It’s just social commentary.

However, I do agree with what some of the others pointed out. It cheapens the hobby/job as a whole. Sure it doesn’t affect your photos, but it does affect how people view photographers. One could argue that if every sees photographers as made by ‘expensive toys’, they won’t exactly be keen to pay you for it, especially if they only view us as ‘boys with expensive toys’.

There is some effect, but I do not think the "cheapen the job/hobby" is 100% due to what we have been talking about. IMHO, if a society/culture wants to cheapen anything, it will find any reason to. The underlying root cause is more in the heart of the culture/society than actions of some individuals.

Agree!

My experience during CNY: what relatives care about more is whether they look good in the photo vs how good your gear is. Or if u help develop photos in 4R for them, they appreciate it, and even more so if they look good in the photo & it's a nice photo.

Yup it’s the singaporean culture to monetarize everything it seems.

I second that, it's a different "wha.." when people see your gear and when they see the nice photos of them you just took for the gathering. I believe everyone here would like to get the second type of "wha.." right? :)

I almost became a victim and always will remain on the thin red line of BBB virus & bursting my budget for stuff, but I always tell myself not to overkill for my current needs. Or I can let my CFO (wife) know what i intend to buy :nono:.. haha..

1. Don't bother to budget.
2. Don't bother the CFO.

Look at the commercial photography industry, events photography industry...

And look at some of the "competitions" out there, which are nothing more than thin veiled attempts to get free stock images.

The second "wha.." not easy .. but the first "wha .. " is just all so much easier :bsmilie:
