St. Theresa's Convent. The light was great here, changing from cloudy to bright to cloudy again.

#6. Used my Canon IXUS as I was too lazy to change lens.

Thanks Elgin, you're most welcome.
If people are interested why not?
Perhaps Olympus Singapore can organize a class to tie in with this weekly event.
Let me check with Clifford and Amos first.

Thanks for showing me around the Blocks around Lorong 6 Toa Payoh today Fonz and gang!!

Fonz you did a GREAT job taking the time to talk to residents, the temple manager and others. IMHO thats the way photography on the streets should be..... engaging people and knowing about them .... kudos

Really enjoyed myself soaking in Toa Payoh life .... brought along an Oly 8080 that was pretty much the king of the prosumer heap in its day.... it feels slow and cranky now compared to all this new technology .... but it still gets the job done at its own pace heh heh heh

We started at Block 28 playground..... man those kids really run (barefoot) all over the place FAST ! I could only catch a couple of shots, when they stopped after stepping on something sharp

a_cut_feet.jpg

5pm light hit a nearby temple across the street .... unfortunately that was the only swath of nice warm light for this outing.... clouds came out later

a_wood_gpld.jpg

The temple had really interesting photos hanging on its walls .... some from many many years ago

Ribbon attached to a ceremonial spear at the temple

Fonz led us over to Blocks 17-20 neighborhood..... markets, hawker center, coffeeshops and alot of other shops catering to the needs of nearby residents

a_woman.jpg

The neighborhood lunatic.... this fella was walking EVERYWHERE constantly smiling and talking to himself

a_lunatic.jpg

Business was a little slow for some .....

a_tailor1.jpg

BUT the variety of stuff on offer was mind blowing...... we found this.... for $1 a piece... and I believe the Angkor story was 2009 July's issue !!! Couldnt help it... picked up a copy... it even came with the regular huge inserted poster !!! I dont think you can go wrong with a $1 NG thats 2 months off the press.

But pockets of loneliness was sad to witness ... for me

a_indian_old_man.jpg

But overall people were friendly and easygoing..... no one chased us away from taking photos

Made a friend in Hamid below.... currently unemployed .... but still with a chin-up attitude and hoping to find work soon.

a_hamid.jpg

Hamid on his electric bike...... he said a full charge could bring him to Changi Village and back to Toa Payoh round trip at between 40 to 50 kph ...... might get one for myself

That is one cool looking steed ..... full suspension somemore !!

a_hamid_on_bike.jpg

I was surprised when Fonz told me that a few blocks in that area were rental flats....... occupancy seemed like zero in a couple of entire blocks and at 30% occupancy in others.... they looked really nice inside... all renovated.

a_webbing.jpg

Apologies if some of the images are pixelated...... not the Oly 8080's fault... I resized and saved at too low a resolution

very nicely seen and captured ed!

i feel that your shots of the napping tailor and the sad elderly man really captured the essence of this part of Toa Payoh, a reflection of the slowing pace and isolation that the elderly residents here go through.

i'm really glad you joined us on yesterday's photowalk, it really is an invaluable lesson to have an experienced street shooter like you with us.

i'll be posting my shots later this week after i have calibrated my monitor, hope monolime, lomophotographer and idontknow will share their shots too.

catch you guys at another photowalk soon!

ha ha .... I actually went back again to that area this afternoon....... tons better light today at 5pm ...... really truly thanks so much for introducing me to this area

where to next weekend ?

one of our past favourite attractions in our neigbhourhood now vanished forever.

ahhh.... lovely kids .... I see you were really making an effort to break the ice with them

Hehe yes, they were throwing sand at us, against the wind. The boy in red threatened to call the police too, muahaha. They were noisy, naughty and playful. Definately lovely and childlike.
