I agree. An used Leica lens with a little fungus already costs $700, about the price for a Bessa R body...
You may already know this, but do visit this site (www.chiifcameras.com)for all your Voigtlander needs. Nicely priced and available here in Singapore! The seller, ChiiFatt is very friendly as well.

Thanks bro, i will definitely get one from him if i decided on a Voightlander Bessa. I was biding a M5 this morning. But i wad out bided. Theres too many crazy leica manias in ebay!!

A M5 doesn't look too hot to me. Why not get a sexy black or grey R3a at the price of a used, dented M5? The Leica can wait till your year end bonus or your next pay check.

The M5 is dam hot to me!! :bsmilie: and its hard to find. Including the parts if the meter is spoilt. So a Bessa may be much better. Thanks!

Alternative,

Its one of my Voigtlanders ;) then one FX70 Yashica FOC. Price of Voigtlander did not marked up ;) So at the end of the day, you have a cool collectible classic Vitessa to start the ball rolling. If metering is a concern, get the VC meter from Chiif. Mine would not be your taste... Leica external metering.

I recommend Bahihos set of Voigtlander too because at $400, think you can squeeze your budget and get a decent RF.

$700 leica? Where? Leica M or Leica R?

Sound great! we just meet up somewhere cosy, quiet (without too many curious eyes and nonsense crowd), some space for chiifatt to show his boxes of gears. This can happen on regular basis. Sound underground? well, nothing wrong with cults of classic gear lovers. short local/overseas trips & exhibition can also be organized in this manner for phototaking (with RF).
We can even share resources like darkroom, studio, sponsor from press for certain events.
Maybe we'll get to evolve into HCB singapore club someday

Once upon a time in ClubSNAP, we have weekly meetup session at Peninsula Plaza food-court, in what was called SEED. It's pretty quiet there nowadays on weekday evening. A possible venue?

count me in for the meetups :)

As for the Leica M5, ohh man, you are one ambitious newbie ;)

IMHO, if possible, get a M2 which I think is more suitable for someone climbing into the Leica wagon. Its quite affordable and basic to use. Leica M5 to me is quite a "luxurious" possession. Leica M5 is further divided into 2 lugs and 3 lugs. The later and improved versions are the 3 lugs. The rarest and desirable being the 3 lugs chrome. However, during that time, when folks sent in their 2 lugs to be overhauled, Leica would add in the 3rd lug, so it could be hung horizontally as well.

The most reliable way to spot a good genuine M5 3 lugs with more reliable mechanisms and performance would be those starting with serial number #135..... This would be more applicable to collectors who are seeking the mint and neat ones.

M5 are usually found in user condition especially the black version because when they were first released... many of the bodies were well used due to the fact it has the FIRST built in TTL for Leica bodies... then all of a sudden, Leica terminated the production of M5 prematurely. Hence to find a M5 in very clean condition is not easy, terming the mint ones as rare find. Altogether, only 33,900 were produced with the last being #1384000.

Oops sorry Chiifei ..... lets get organized. Rather then being "eaten up" by cam-x/prime/cathay/ron/LPS local-photo-shop. Personally i don't like their stuckup attitude or shrewness, there must be alternatives to that, chiifei here is much nicer in dealing, at least paying attention, giving useful advices.

i think..this thread is gonna be very poisonious

Hi CZJena,

cam-x/prime/cathay/ron/LPS local-photo-shop are just businesses providing services to local photographers. There is certainly some element of commercial characteristics in the way they deal.

There are also nice people there who have provided helpfull advises to newbies and enthusiasts at these places. Furthermore, they have been in camera business for many many years... there must be something they are doing correctly and that's why they are still in business & people still visit them.

As for me, I just started out not too long ago. I have a full time business running in parallel and I have to juggle both businesses. My running cost is significantly lower and my volume is also low. That's why I can provide very personalised service to you guys. At the same time, I learn alot myself. I also get to know nice folks here who have given me very good pointers and encouragement. And I even got a Si Fu, who spent many hours explaining to me the history of camera shops in Penisular area. :) I really enjoy doing this....

As for Camera Fair, some kind folks just PMed me on some suggestions, inviting established photographers for talks at convenient venue like NAFA or YMCA. Thanks for the suggestions. Please continue to keep them coming. My goal is what Mike just said, like in the land of AngMo's, some kind of classic camera fair where people meet and exchange ideas and experience and once in a while bring out their old collection for trade and discussion and view some of their latest slides or photographs.

As I have never visited a mini camera fair or even a photography discuss group, I need ideas and pointers to conceptualise this. Please, please, any suggestions email me or bring up here. Once I have enough ideas and resources, I will put up something and everyone can come together..... and put a face to the names we see here. :)

Right in front there is a shop. Think all of us know which shop is that. You want him to stare at you when you are smiling and laughing and chatting away with the clubsnap folks? Inevitably you will talk about prices, then one of the folks will point to that shop and say that shop charges $800, but he got it from clubsnap B/S for $550. Think if he overheard that hor..... I got no eye see.

Somebody just PMed me this idea. Why don't meet at a Community Center and from there evolved into an official Classic Cameras Club of Singapore. Wow, ambitious and happening man!

yeah man! I love the m5 though its bigger and alot of ppl find it ugly. I was bidding for the M5 with 3 lugs! But anyway you can get a luigi half case cover if its only 2 lugs to hang it horizontally. Its still my dream cam. I will wait for my chance to get one! But maybe i should start with a M2 first. Theres no metering for m2 right?

Hey Good idea! Let's have an agenda. For a start, I can open up one piece of R3M and let you guys take a look at this wonderful RF camera by Cosina and make some of your hearts itch... and also the well built 40mm/f1.4.... that you can allow you to shoot monkeys at East Coast Park ... :bsmilie:

The Luigi half-case and strap is such a wonderful product ! Luxurious and soft leather and will definitely keep your RF in good shape over the years. I believe you can have anything customized by him ... I was thinking of one too for my DSLR, but in the end I thought the DSLR did not deserve such a luxury, just let it wear out, DSLRs will have no value in time anyway :)

Long live camera classics :)
