Chinese opera (Chinese: 戏曲/戲曲; Pinyin: xìqǔ
is a popular form of drama and musical theatre in China with roots going back as far as the third century CE. There are numerous regional branches of Chinese opera, of which the Beijing opera (Jingju) is one of the most notable. Chinese opera is seldom publicly staged in the 21st century, except in formal Chinese opera houses, and during the lunar seventh month Chinese Ghost Festival in Asia as a form of entertainment to the spirits and audience. Chinese Opera can be categorised into the different dialect groups eg, Hokkien, Cantonese, etc. Some troops are also known for their "trademark" plays and such they have their own fan base. The fans would travel across the island to catch their performances, wherever the troop performs. Of course, there are also those (like me) who catch such performances, while passing by or whenever such performances are available within the estate. Sadly, less of the young generation today is keen in such traditional art, perhaps attributed to the fact that most of the them do not speak the native language of their respective dialect group.
I chanced upon a Chinese Opera Troop performing during the lunar seventh month in Singapore. Spoke to the troop manager and got permission to document a little on Chinese Opera - The Unseen.
