Chinese Opera - The Unseen

Chinese opera (Chinese: 戏曲/戲曲; Pinyin: xìqǔ) is a popular form of drama and musical theatre in China with roots going back as far as the third century CE. There are numerous regional branches of Chinese opera, of which the Beijing opera (Jingju) is one of the most notable. Chinese opera is seldom publicly staged in the 21st century, except in formal Chinese opera houses, and during the lunar seventh month Chinese Ghost Festival in Asia as a form of entertainment to the spirits and audience. (Courtesy of Wikipedia)

Chinese Opera can be categorised into the different dialect groups eg, Hokkien, Cantonese, etc. Some troops are also known for their "trademark" plays and such they have their own fan base. The fans would travel across the island to catch their performances, wherever the troop performs. Of course, there are also those (like me) who catch such performances, while passing by or whenever such performances are available within the estate. Sadly, less of the young generation today is keen in such traditional art, perhaps attributed to the fact that most of the them do not speak the native language of their respective dialect group.

I chanced upon a Chinese Opera Troop performing during the lunar seventh month in Singapore. Spoke to the troop manager and got permission to document a little on Chinese Opera - The Unseen.

The backstage of publicly staged Chinese Opera performances is pretty much open. If you happened to pass a public performance, you could see the ongoing performance at the front, while the backstage takes on a whole different life altogether. My host graciously allowed me to take a sneak backstage and discover for myself the interesting world on the other side.

Aside from the main actors and actresses, the troop comprises of a whole lot of people. The troop manager, the musicians, the lighting crew (in this case it was just 1 person), backstage crew, each having an important role to ensure a smooth performance. In most cases (like the one I was at), you will also find friends and family who help out to buy dinner, run errands, help to suit up, keep their friends and loved ones company etc. All these adds to the characteristics of the troop and makes the unseen portion of every performance, evermore interesting.

From the preparations to the waiting, when it comes to showtime, you will sense a change in everyone's mood. The laughter and chatter stops and tension builds up. The actors and actresses await their cue and roll out the performance. Everyone in backstage peeps to make sure everything is on track. Everyone who has contributed in a way or another takes pride in the performance. Your applause is the best way to show them your appreciation.

As I silently made my way down, I thank my host for the opportunity to experience and see this unseen side. It was an interesting experience for me.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. This roll came a year too late. If I remember correctly, I shot this last year near Eunos MRT station. Decided to put together the pictures for a small essay.

Hello, tan131.
You don't mind if I quote these two photos...
They have a lot of feeling in them, the way you have shot them. I really find them meaningful.
