ed, i am like you in terms of proficiency in chinese.

here is a translation website that might be useful. I tried translation on chemical terms and technical terms, and they came out pretty accurate.

cheers!

Seriously speaking, I don't really know how to see also. LOL. But over there the fresh ones cost around 30 RMB a 500g bag. Good or no good, it is still very cheap.

i saw the fresh ginseng in supermarkets in Seoul, too, but dared not buy. I have absolutely no clue on how to brew/prepare fresh ginseng.

and idea daredevil? :dunno:

anybody been to changbaishan (长白山)?

I'm actually looking for directions from changchun (长春) to Changbaishan.. Driving from changchun to changbaishan is about 10hours. but not very sure the directions & what i will be facing.

Any help please?

Dunno abt driving, but for public transport, the closest train station is Baihe (or Erdao Baihe). From there, can take minibus or taxi etc...
You can check out the regular guidebooks which provides slightly more details...
There's also supposed to be an airport that will be opening in 2010! (or mabbe it has already opened!)

Jilin and Chang Bai shan are beautiful places but November is too early in my opinion.
You will not able to see the unique wusong trees in Jilin.
Wusong is spectacular especially if you go to view them Wusong dao.
You can also see them along the Song Hua Jiang side. Because of air pollution the frost don't look so white. By 10 am they already melted away. So viewing best before 8 am.

It does not occurs all the time. It depend on the weather the day and night before.
More chances it will happen in early January.

Jilin is an industrial city so atmosphere also pretty hazy in the city.

Temperature would be below zero even during the day by mid Nov.

Chang Bai shan best time to go is towards end September when the foliage turn red.
Or for winter scene go after they had plenty snowfall.
Heaven lake may be frozen in Nov as temp at the top is much colder. There is also waterfall up in the mountain that you should also see.

First you need to take a bus from the entrance area to the mid level then a four wheeler to the peak. Then climb a little to reach the Heaven Lake. Waterfall is at another location that you can walk there. But if lazy can take the free bus to cut down walking. Bring your own lunch package so you don't waste time go back to restaurant for lunch. Anyway food lousy there.

Going from Jilin city to CBS takes about 8 hr. From Changchun easily 10 hr. Nearly 2 yrs ago there was no highway. Make sure the car is in good condition. Along the way there is a short cut but road is dusty and if the driver knows, he can save 1 hr.

You have to pay entrance fee at the mountain. Bus ride and 4 wheeler charged separately.

You can book a room at the hotel on the mountain. That way you get more time to roam around the mountain. Else at the foot of CBS are several hotels.

Lastly, better wear shoes with metal spikes when walking on the mountain if the is snow.
You don't want to slip and break your camera gear. Just buy those shoes they sell in Chang Chun or Jilin or just rent them before entering the CBS. The spike can be pulled open when needed. About RMB 50 or there about. BARGAIN...

Enjoy your trip.

Bro cannot see your images above..... try again , we very keen to see what the place looks like

my colleague from Jilin said that the best way to get to Changbaisan from Changchun is to take overnight train from Changchun to Antu (Antu is near Yanji)..... arrive at about 5+ to 6am at Antu

Save on 1 night hotel and sleep on the train bunk beds

He said that Antu is the nearest point to Changbaisan........ will try this recommendation next week and report back

Ok posting again..

Antu .. I can't remember but think you have to pass Baihe first to reach CBS.
How many days will be that sector of your program. Because the train is very slow.
But at least you don't to pee in the cold air on road side.

Thanks for sharing! :)

Very informative! Thanks for sharing. Actually intending a trip to Haerbin in Dec. Still planning, but thankfully i'll be having a tour guide to take me around, plus will be able to save on lodging. Any rough gauge as to how much to expect to spend there for a ~7day journey?

any precautions for the north korean border?

Locals are friendly but careful... as the people are riddled with politics. They want to make friends with you to find how how they can derive information or use u.

what politics is there in manchuria?

If you have some time to spend in Jilin you may want to visit the sceiece musuem to see the meteorite that fell in Jilin.

You can also feel one of the meteorite for a small fee and had your photo taken by your own camera.
