Hi.

There's been a few discussions about the
best/ cheapest place to get photos
from digicam printed.

How about traditional prints?
Any cheap place which is reliable and
has consistent results?

hee ... want to get value for money =)

you do realize that cheap doesn't = good? i mean, you pay for what you get, and if you wanna compare decent standards, that's a little subjective. everyone's standards differs, and what is acceptable to some is out of the question for others.

for myself, i use Konota at Peninsula for film print, and RGB for slides. works for me so far... :D

Never go for the cheapest. Ask yourself whether such savings are worth your investment in your camera equipment? Why spend so much on camera equipment, a lot of time and effort taking your shots, only to stinge and go to a poor quality lab? Then you get back your prints, find that they are no good, blame it on your equipment, buy more equipment and the viscious cycle repeats. Do yourself (and your equipment) a favour, go to a reputable lab to have your prints made.

yea... agreed. =) erm... i would say tht it's the same as using a super computer with super graphics processing ability(eg. SGI), then by outputin' on a lousy monitor, surely u cun get the best potential from your graphic card, etc.

so, maybe u could pay abit more, like for Color Lab(reputated for great results), process for $3.50, 3R for 30cents, 4R for 40cents... think it's pretty worth it... yea.. even shot on kodak max 400, results still pretty good. - btw, i dun work for Color Lab

Hi CK and Firefox 13

yup - you guys are right about paying for
quality prints.

not that I'm not willing to pay, just
wanted to know of a place which does
good prints with reasonable price cos' ...

promise not to laugh, kae?

I get my prints develop at a stall that sells
fruit which is within walking distance from
my house

*cringes* now I'm going to be known as
the "fruit photographer", aren't I?

anyway, the uncle there is nice and
everything, but ... well ... let's just
say it feels pathetic to collect your
prints while aunties are haggling over
the price of melons and pears ...

Ah, the ubiquitous 'neighbourhood lab'. Go to a pro lab lar. Once you see their output, you'll never visit the fruit stall again. :)

The standard $0.50 per 4R, $5 handling fee. They are at Adelphi, opposite Funan Centre, beside the St. Andrew Cathedral.

it seems like no difference in pricing between pro labs and non-pro labs. why don't people use pro labs instead if it's really much better?

There IS a difference, and it is very noticeable, even to the average joe. If you've tried printing at Colour Lab, RGB, Foto Hub, etc, you'll see the difference compared to printing at Photo Finish, Singapore Colour etc. Another thing about pro labs is the consistency. They are able to consistently give good results, unlike the non-pro labs which are sometimes good, sometimes horrible.

Hi Ck

Would you mind telling me where
RGB and Foto Hub are located?

I've been to the RGB website,
but they don't list their 2 locations.

thanks

RGB has two branches : One at Beach Road, the other near the Somerset MRT, in Kingsland House or something like that. I've only been to the Beach Road branch once or twice.

FotoHub is at 3rd floor OUB Centre, Raffles Place.

I will definitely try the pro labs after I get my digital photos sorted out. :gbounce:

For negative prints, I use Stanley Lim Colour Centre situated at Midlink Plaza near Bugis Junction. I know them personally through my photography club in NTU. They adjusted the colours and contrast as well. I would call them a pro lab.

For slides, I will go down to RGB at Beach Road.

I will go in this order. Drop off slides at RGB. Then proceed to Bugis Junction for lunch. Then go to Stanley Colour Centre and stay there for a nice chat while waiting for them to develop the prints. (I always prepare the negative for developing in the developing machine then wait for them to print). Then go back to RGB to collect my slides. Then go home and review my work.

Actually, doing colour and contrast adjustments well does not make a lab a pro lab. ;) Hey, all labs are supposed to do that well! Anyway, pro labs are usually not part of a film chain (e.g. Fuji Image Plaza, Kodak Express) and they are free to use whatever they find is good. (That's why you see Colour Lab and RGB switching from Kodak/Noritsu to Fuji Frontiers) They also process other formats other than 35mm (e.g. 120, 4x5 etc). Of course, handling of your film is also done professionally - no scratches, fingerprints etc.

I have the chance to look at a guy working on a minilab machine in a Konica lab in Orchard. Boy, looking at the way he works, I will not want to send my film there. Anyhow hold negative, feed into the machine, and when the long strip of film curls around the "workspace", he just pick it up and anyhow flick it away.

How much does Stanley charge anyway? And what machine does he use?

CK

RGB switching from Kodak/Noritsu to Fuji Frontiers is due to the feature on the machine, at the moment only Noritsu provide an add on to their machine which allow them to do APS, but Frontiers can do all the print from normal 35 mm, APS, slide and digi print.
most of the print, doesnt only relay on the skill of the printer but also on the paper they use (kodak, kodak royal, fuji, konica, afga etc) and it depend very much on the photographer which they prefer, just like 35mm film which u can see it have max xtra etc too many brand to choose from, not just cheap but good quality.

kodak paper : more to yellowish
fuji paper : more to greenish
konica paper : more to blueish
afga : more to reddish

that had been shown well on their sign board, kodak yellow, fuji green, konica blue, afga red.

hence it depend very much on yourself which type of colour u like most, i would suggest u try every shop around your place to get the best result, going to town everytime, sometime doesnt really suit your time, beside tradition proccessing machines take 20 min to proccess 1 roll of file(2 roll 1 cycle) and can take up to 8 roll every 5 10 min. proccessing fee is almost the same, some can go as low as 1.00 + index(wow) which only cost extra .50 for the index. yes, 35 mm roll can can make into index just like APS, that the reason why APS face out now :D

4R print as low as 0.10(konica) 0.20(kodak) 0.25(kodak royal) 0.30(fuji) as u might already know konica already have an island wide offer of 0.20 for 4R and low proccessing fee, + u get discount the next time u go back to them :D
