Cheapest country for camera and lenses etc (overall)

it is definitely the cheapest in Hong Kong. (if you know how to bargain then you can go to shanghai and get even better prices on some items, eg. the older lenses)

You made direct comparison with US prices?

Hi,

I bought my stuff from HK. This info might be useful for you:

Personally, I like
Echo Photo & Audio
( tel:23760478 ) at Shop D, G/F, Hanyee Building, 19-21 Hankow Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon

Give them a call. It is a very small shop that can be missed easily.

Hi all,

Is Japan a good place to buy?

Another NEW MEMBER joined recently promoting DD Electronics:sweat::sweat:
I don't see an issue highlighting them if it is related to TS question.
I rather get from DD electronics than buying from HKG or US, at least if there is some issue i can contact them back rather shipping item back to HKG or US at my own expense.
But again not all items at DD elec. are cheaper than local market, but don't take my word for it. Maybe getting item from US will carry international warranty but not from DD electronics, so do you home work before heading down to the shop ;).

lol, the thing is DD Electronics really gave cheap prices.. and without the intl warranty by canon now, and the prices of DD Elec rather close to overseas prices, then might as well get from DD Elec??

JPY163000 ~= S$2610
The lens is selling in Hong Kong at around HK$14,680/S$2,440 (gray) or HK$15,530/S$2,580 (local)

For the same price at B&S, i'd rather get brand new from DD Electronics (which I did).

Next best option for me is from Hong Kong. Haven't tried any other sources though. Does anyone know of any export shops in Singapore?

B&H and Adorama are usually among the cheapest US web sites BUT NOT ALWAYS.

Other reputable US web sites that sell photographic equipment but routinely ignored by CSers include newegg.com, beachcamera.com, buy.com, vanns.com, just to name a few.

If you're willing to buy from US (through friends or by yourself directly) but are afraid to venture outside of B&H or Adorama, you may not be getting the best deal possible.

I think that most countries may have their individual "bargains". In other words, if you search long enough and hard enough, you will find a lens that is cheaper in Paris, in Dubai or in Vancouver when compared to any other part of the world. But over-all, items seem to be cheapest in the US or in Hong Kong.

My philosophy may differ from many others. I believe in buying within one's own area even if it may be $50 or even $100 more expensive than elsewhere. The reason; if anything goes wrong in the future, it is far easier and 'less expensive' to rectify the issue locally than in another country.

Worst case scenario (and nightmare) would be a person who has bought 8 different lenses from eight different foreign countries in which warranties are applicable only in the host country. If something goes wrong with each and every lens (unlikely but within the realm of possibility), then where does this person turn to?

You only need to worry about warranty for the first year. After that, it doesn't matter. So, the bottom line is how much risk a person is willing to take in order to save x amount of $. If the saving is big enough (for me), I am willing to take that risk. If I can save 20% on each lens purchase, then I will consider it a good deal to get 5 lenses for the price of 4.

Out of all lenses and cameras, I think not more than 10% need to visit the service center during the warranty period. Through my past experience, electronic items normally will have problem after the warranty period is over. So if you can save thousands of dollars getting your gear cheaper elsewhere, why not ;)

Agree....... but there is always a balance between your comfort feeling and price. There are many and many horror stories at http://www.resellerratings.com/ ... there is one notorious place in US that house all those fly by night online camera shops!!

Not many people would like the idea to risk $1400 for a saving of $50
