Colours can be tweaked using the picture controls of the newer DSLRs.

By default, the "two-series" Nikon consumers DSLRs (D50/D70/D80 and maybe D90) are preloaded with a higher gamma (mid-tone) together with a slight boost in saturation. That is why these models' colours 'look' richer to start with -- but not necessary accurate colours.

i see thats true but DR cant be tweak? hai i think in the end its still the glass that is impt.. cameras come and go.. my super old ai-s lens is still my fav all these years

Another good thing about the newer cam that is not often talk about is the picture control. The picture helps you customise your "negative". You will need to spend some time playing with it. And in the future when you upgrade your cam, you will still be able to use these customised setting, just simply export it to your new cam.
For the D90 (not on the D300) they even have picture control menu on the info menu, double press on info button will let you have quick excess to the picture control function. Pretty quick and handy.

i see. well welll.. so much for technology. u notice in cs we v concern abt equipments than actually shooting haha i think i better get myself to shoot more liao :P

hmm.. D80 does give me gd images but the metering is kinda inconsistent. I did prefer the tokina 12-24 i tried it over the sigma and i prefer the tokina's contrasty colors in doors

Try getting used to the centreweight average for a start. Matrix metering has always been inconsistent for me. Understanding your equipment plays a big part in getting your images right.
