For these shots, I will use either 50mm f/1.4d or 85mm f/1.8d lenses.

Hi... I never tried 50mm f/1.4...
Do u think 50 mm f/1.8 can achieve similar (a little background blur) photos?
(Thinking of buying f/1.8, cheaper...)

I believe the 50mm/f1.8d will produce almost similar bokeh. I usually do not
open all the way to f1.4, only in low situations. These cat shots use f/2.8 aperture
most of the time. I believe that 50mm/f1.8d is a sharp lenses. The 50mm lenses
are good lenses.
I now use the 85mm/f1.8d more and the longer distance do not intimidate
the cats.
