You can try taking pictures of cats at night. Their iris (the black part of their eyes) will be round instead of a slit( due to less light), hence giving them a less 'fierce' look. :)

I have tried a few night shots but the problem is the lack of light seldom
bring out the nice colours of their bodies and facial features. I do not
want to use flash.

Anyway, zac08 has done an excellent job on his "Cats at night ..." series.
