You can try taking pictures of cats at night. Their iris (the black part of their eyes) will be round instead of a slit( due to less light), hence giving them a less 'fierce' look.

I have tried a few night shots but the problem is the lack of light seldom
bring out the nice colours of their bodies and facial features. I do not
want to use flash.

Anyway, zac08 has done an excellent job on his "Cats at night ..." series.

Yes, they may appear fierce, but they are really gentle and some are
very timid too.
