Hi,
I was thinking of getting a new lense for the A-100 (I got the stock kit with 2 lenses) and I'm mainly into portriat and candid shots. I was thinking something along the lines of the 50mm 1.4F lens, but would this be a better choice?

I'm just getting back into photography after abt 10 yrs not touching a camera, and I got the budget at the moment (but was planning a lens + Flash), so $$$ is not so much of a problem as making the right decsion. Any advise from the veterans around here?

work within your budget...sony flash r not cheap..but they r fantastic...sony lenses will 'kill' ppl with their prices...but its gd quality... can try getting Km lenses../ third party lenses..:)

whats your budget like?

I was thinking around the $1600 mark for 2nd hand lens, and brand new flash (ppl told me be carefull by second hand flash, cause capacitor etc deterorates over time), so roughly 900 on a 2nd hand lens and 700 for the 56M flash from sony.

But like I say, I'm just getting back into it, and I really like the sample CZ pics posted... so wondering if this round should forgo the flash and just get the CZ

ehhh ohhhhhhh....BBB virus ;p lai liao...hehehe

Go to SONY Gallery and try it out and see if you like it, both the image quality, build and feel. The lens f-stop is not 2.8 either, it's f3.5-4.5. If you can work within this f-stop then it's worth the while to consider this lens. Do remember it's build for APS-C sensor size only and when the new 7D replacement comes out (and you have intention to get that) and the sensor is indeed 1.3x then this lens may not work well on the new body.

Depending on how much flash photography do you do. I always have 2 x 56 flash with me. It enable me to do location portrait without lugging those heavy studio flashes.

As far as lens, you need to know what sort of shooting style you are after...

I used to shoot with zoom lens (28-70 f2.8 G, 28-75 f2.8 D, 70-200 f2.8 G SSM) type of lens. I am more leaning towards prime lens now. Yes, you are limited because you can't zoom. But you will take better picture because u are constantly moving around and try the better everytime you shoot. Also with prime lens, you have a flexible to shoot below f2.8 (f2 and f2.8 is a BIG different, and f1.4 and f2 is a big different too).

U can see my signature on the lens that I am using most of the time.

CZ lenses are great... but minolta one is equally as good, namely 28mm f2.0, 35mm f1.4 G, 85mm f1.4 G.

If you are shooting a lot of candid and portrait a 35mm f1.4 G will be nice because you are getting effectively 55mm on your A100.

If you can wait for the flash, go for the lens first then use the money later to get the flash.

All the best.

Hart

Well, you have a generous budget. I would actually suggest getting second-hand lenses from Dyxum, adorama, ebay (look for shutterblade). I would be careful with investing SGD $699 in a Sony 50mm f/1.4 if it costs half that outside SG.

Thanks for all the great advise guys (and Gals?). I'm going to take it all away and sleep on it for a while.. :)

Anymore photos from the 16-80? :(

Tons, though I'm being greedy and sorting through them first. ;)

Hey! Show em' all!

A bit short right? Prefer a longer lens, more anonymous for more natural candid shots... tendency for people to be awe of your huge 7D with vertical grip and flash...

yo CZ owners,

a quick question:

since the vignetting already so bad, did it worsen when you added a non-silm filter(eg. normal ones)?

Long enough lar...

If I shoot with 35mm f1.4, I will normally shoot without grip nor flash... natural light only... works fine for me.

Remember with digital, u need to always shoot a little wider so u can crop later. the crop from sensor and actual printing size is often different, so you need to allow for this. With film, it is always shoot to fill in the frame.

Anyway, different people will have different opinion on what is their prefered Focal length.

For me... 28mm, 35mm, 85mm are the most used lens.

Hart
