capturing video into mac

hi guys i have difficulty in capturing video (DVtape) from panasonic nv-gs250. googled but its mentioned tt need to use firewire but i cant find any firewire ports at the camera. been transfering thru usb all the while to my ol pc... :dunno:

There is a solution to this puzzle if you are willing to purchase an external harddrive.

Some casings of external harddrives come with both FireWire port and a USB port. Just connect the harddrive to the MacBook using USB and connect the harddrive to the video camera using FireWire

iMovie is an excellent software for video editing for amateur. However, you need to be aware of hardware compatibility to iMovie.

Thanx lloh108 n azman for the info. perhaps i could try the external harddrive option. i'll try to borrow one first b4 investin in one. capturing/digitizing is more of a concern for me as i've worked on a few editing s/ws before.

I don't quite understand your predicament.

When a DV cam says it's 'Firewire compliant', it means that you can use a normal DV out to Firewire. As in just use a transfer cable that has a DV in to fit on the videocamera's DV out itself and a Firewire head to fit into your PC/Mac's Firewire slot.

At least that's what I do. This cable is available at any reputable electronic store at about S$20+.

he's got this part down okay if you refer to post # 3. prob is his macbook doesn't have a 1394/firewire port.

Hmmm... not sure about that man.

From post 3, I can only understand that he found information about the newer Macbooks not having Firewire ports, and not that he has a new Macbook and he has trouble transferring video because it has no Firewire ports. Cos when you see his first post, he says he's always been transferring via USB.

So, TS - please let us understand better, so that we can help you.

If you are using the new Alu MacBook (which has NO firewire port) and your video cam has firewire port, whether you are using iMovie or FCE/FCP to do video editing, you are out of luck!

This is the most "pui" shortcoming of the new MacBook:thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd:. The white (plastic) MacBook, though of lower spec, has no such problem.

Forget about those adapter wires whatsoever, they are not going to solve your problems.

One possible "solution" (stupid as it may sound) is to install win xp in your macbook via boot camp and then use some other window based video editing softwares (such as sony vegas) to edit your video. (presuming that you already have the win xp, vegas has a trial version.)

I suspect it's because Apple is progressively doing away with Firewire totally and going towards USB 3.0 (or perhaps even Wireless USB), which has a maximum transfer speed of 4.8Gbps.

New macs come with Firewire 800 instead of Firewire 400 (show in px above) You need an adapter cable or plug to connect Firewire400 devices to the Firewire800 ports. That's all.
