For me i select a manual AF selection point.
The AF works by contrast, so what I usually do is aim the selection point at the eyes, half-hold the shutter release and then shift my camera to my desired composition.

i'm another guy who loves the 400D. i was eagerly waiting for the upgrade 450D mainly the ISO in viewfinder but disappointed with change of battery and storage :(

I have the camera for a year now. Just got the grip becoz i bought a flash unit. it really feels good with the grip. I encourage anyone who is considering that to get it.

I got my 400D early last year, it was my first DSLR.

Im using a battery grip, wireless remote(RC-1) (the reaction time can be quite slow)

Kit lens, 50mm f1.8 (hoping to get a 1.4 soon), 24-70mm f2.8

I strongly recommend the 24-70 as an everyday/walkaround lens. Its incredibly sharp for a zoom lens, and I find that the 1.6x FOVCP of the 400D actually puts me into the range that I'd like.

just got back from cambodia trip with my 400D, it service me well..after a holiday trip, i knew what kind of lens i need, wide angle lens..its best for oversea trip for scenery

hi xtremequantumx,
I focused on the face too, half pressed, and re-composed my shot. I used the manual AF selection point, the middle one, but the focus didn't stay at the face after I re-composed my shot...where have I gone wrong?

thanks!

hi wendy,
are you using AI Focus?

hope to see more picture with different lens taken....

definitely agree with you :) . . . now, my 10-22mm has almost been permanently mounted on my cam :bsmilie:

Does the 10-22mm distort photos when mounted on the 400d at 10mm?

Yep it does, particular much more at the sides. Much more when in horizontal sides.
But that is how the image gets good. You might wanna avoid placing ur subject too near to the edge as it will make them look distorted and fat

one shot focus?

did you lock your AF?
as in after it locked the focus point you shld hear a beep sound, in your viewfinder bottom right corner the green LED shld not be blinking but lit up.

i'm also intending to get this 10-22mm lens
what's the focal length to use to avoid distortion from your experience?
going for a overseas stint, so was wondering if this is the lens i shld get to capture the scenic landscape moments...

Ah.... I SEE!!! So..... how do I lock it?
Thanks man, I think my pictures will have better quality after knowing this.
LOL!

you shld hear a "beep" sound, or see the green LED at the bottom right corner of your viewfinder lit up.
as mentioned, the AF works by contrast, so what i do is i usually half-depress the shutter button and aim my desired AF point at the eye(what i usually do), continue to half-depress the shutter to do my composition, then fully depress to take your photo. (:
