So far, from my experience, Canon lense is quite reliable, little problem. Several of my lenses are from HK with international warranty, and I have never got any problem (touch wood).

So even if we start a shop that sells grey set with shop warranty, will still be able to make some money (unless kana cheat customer who spoils the lense but claims it is a defect)

Every brand of lenses have their share of problems. Though none of my current equipment has given me any problems, yet these are inevitable as electronics do fail without warning.

If I were to buy a lens that cost me $7000...I definitely will want warranty to go with it. Will not trust a shop warrant. In fact even if it is like $1000 lens I will not trust a shop warranty also. Just like car, I also never send to 3rd party service centre. Unless grey set is 40% cheaper....may be I will consider. But as it is grey sets are about $100-200 cheaper only.....not worth.

Thats a huge increase in price!

Wow... that's a huge increase!

Luckily, I've just completed my lens focal range last week before the prices went up!:sweat::sweat:

Now its 3 zooms + 3 primes for me! ... the only thing missing is a super-tele in the 400mm range... :p

Its nothing but good business. SEening the price goes up for new Glass, our fellow CS also selling their use item at higher price. A word of advice for those who want to make business: " time to sell sell sell ...." and those who are buying: "time to hold the Green!!!"

i already see some obvious profiteering in the BnS

You make it sound like it's a bad thing. Now that the new lenses cost more, people selling must of course sell them for higher prices so that they can fund new purchases at higher prices. That's how it works.

If you are selling your lenses, of course you want to get a good price. When the lenses cost more in the shops, they will be higher at BnS since people are now willing to pay more.

So, higher prices at BnS is only natural.

the popular 70-200 f/4 IS price went up about close to 300bucks...

Haha. well i don't think so. I think the higher prices apply to new items, but for used/2nd hand items, it shouldn't still sell more than their current worth cause of the usage/uncertainty factor. Probably some people are just willing to spend more for the 2nd hand items but it shouldn't really be the case.

It's like one of the previous replies, if you're a seller: sell sell sell, if buyer: hold hold hold. very true.

There is not right or wrong answer, but I wonder if its correct to sell above your original price. I'm sure that there will people who says as long as there is a willing buyer, why not?

Guys please help to update the price list. I just updated for 85 f1.8 and 70-200 f4L

Let's give an example...

I bought my EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM a couple of months back from a fellow CSer at $1400 with B+W MRC filter. It's in great condition. No scratches or whatsoever to speak of. I would describe it as a 10.

At the current prices of the EF 7-200 f/4L at the shops, I'm sure if I sell it at $1450, it will be snapped up in a minute. Why should I sell it at $1400 or lower?

True... if we sell it higher than it's current value, nobody is stupid enough to buy it. But because the prices at the shops have gone up, our lenses are actually worth more.

There's no need to take my word for it. Just look at the BnS section and just take not of the sale prices in the next few weeks.

When I buy and sell things, I make very sure that the buyer is happy. I describe things so conservatively, the buyers are usually very very happy when they see the things I have to sell. I think that's important.

I don't think it is wrong to sell things at a higher price than what you bought it for. I have bought lenses from Ebay and sold them off at a profit after using it for couple of years because US prices were much cheaper than Singapore. The buyers are not only willing, they are extremely happy. They get a great lens at a large discount from what they would have paid at the shops.

I think lying about the condition of the product you are selling is wrong. I have met many such people in the BnS section. But making a small profit because you are smart about things is definitely not wrong. Else you might as well label the shops that deal with 2nd cameras as criminals.

I see your point about having agreement between the buyer and seller.

Anyway, I wouldn't stretch my comparision to 2nd hand camera shops lah, basically I take it as they are charging acting as a middlemen. :)

In spite of our individual morality yardsticks, the reality is this...

If you can buy a sharp minty one month old EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM with local warranty and all at say $2600 at BnS, then it would be a good deal even though the seller is a profiteer, to the tune of $100. Or, we can say he is charitable, since he can probably get away with selling it for $2700 to someone who really needs it, but he is selling it to you at lower than what the lens is worth because he likes you? :)

Do give me a call when you are selling your house during the next property bull run:bsmilie:
