Canon price went up ~20% yesterday.. Scary

Any comments about the prices in HK? I was looking at the YGdragon grossly outdated pricelist a few weeks back, at that time it seems sg and HK almost same price, not anymore it seems.

If I not mistaken the price increase is global. Maybe to minimise the impact is to look for a used one in HK or JPN.


Or if you can wait, then wait till your favorite camera model is replaced by another model, then it should be a great bargain.

But I know though it's a wise value for money move, not much ppl can hold or choose this path

Sample price from one of the HK photography forum DCHOME.NET:
70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM - HK$13,400 = S$2,680 (25/01/2009)
70-200mm f/4.0L IS USM - HK$8,100 = S$1,620 (25/01/2009)

Not sure if this is before or after their price hike.

Yup 100% sure, it is a small sticker use to tag price or store code..

and on the email eqoute that they sent me it says that the "lens is available".

I tried to confirm on the price for a certain camera body. And it seemed that only the lens prices had gone up. Not really sure though, just an observation.

I don't think it's rare. I was quoted for 17-55mm f/2.8 and waiting for stock to come in. Then now, quote not honored (and there was constant communication every few days).

Damn angry and I went to buy from other store. Even new quote is higher than others which made me boil... gave me the too bad attitude. I am very loyal if treated fairly, you give me 1 bad experience, you never get my sales again. I have spent more then 5 figure sum there and that's it (not to mention introducing a ton of customers).

Not a single cent more.

I run a business too and relationship is everything. Sometimes, I will take a hit if I feel I own part of the issue and sometimes, giving an inch, you get a mile. You really have to recognize Type A customers (good ones) and keep them.

I thought I was a 'Type A' customer with CP, but they too are very unbending when it comes to prices. I spend a lot there, but I don't get any special treatment. However, they have honoured all their equotes so far.

I don't think they consider customers like us 'Type A'. Type A are people who go in, ask for a price, and then just buy without comparing. People like us, who get equotes and buy from the cheapest source, are definitely not Type A.

But I do feel that they should honour their equotes as far as possible. If the price has increased, they should at least give you a discount from the new price to a point where they make enough to cover their administrative cost. It is a matter of integrity.

I got all my lenses, camera body and tripod from CP and today I went to get my speedlite which I got quoted like 3 days ago before the price increase.

I went in thinking they might not honor it but to my surprise and I didn't print the e-quote to proof too, they gave me the price that I told them I was quoted for.

Just FYI, I overheard James - one of the salesman - my favorite at CP, quoting one customer a new price for 24-105L @ $1.8k+.

Looked for 70-200 f2.8L today, most shops quoting around 1900. TK 1960, MS 1920, CP 1890. 70-200 f4L is now 1860 at TK.

Think i'll let the price settle down a bit.. I'm sure Canon will be offering something soon - freebies or whatever.

In JB, CLS photo was worse, not a single Canon L lens on the shelf, only some EFS55-250 and 18-200. They said no more stock waiting for Canon but few weeks back they told me they have some lens stock in hand. normal tactics i guess. EFS55-250 price tag there was RM1090, SG price now is around 470.

I got quote from MS, AP for 100-400L at ~$2500. They told me the price has increased by 20%. But the quote for 5dmk2 kit still at $5200.

All my friends there are rushing to buy lenses before 1st March as there will be price increase.

Rumours has it that it is going up by 30%.......

So I think it is a world wide phenomenon.
