Canon price went up ~20% yesterday.. Scary

I have long suspected that this will be Canon marketing strategy.

Selling body at lower price, gain from the lense sale.

This business model is similar to printer business. We can get printer at very very cheap price, but the ink is expensive. I worked in one of the printer manufacturer before and the engineer told me that it is the ink sale that made money not the printer. Another example is motorized tooth brush. The brush refill is expensive.

Now, if more people can afford dslr, automatically lense sale will be up as people needs various lense for their photography needs.

hmm...but the body prices arent selling any cheaper...

Because it would make perfect sense to increase the price of lens first, then try to increase the customer base. The new customers may not necessarily know what the old prices were, and thus tend more to buy it at the new pricing, thinking that was the default market price.

If they tried to increase the customer base, then increase the lens price, then customers may be exposed to the "old" pricing and lament about new pricing, affecting both new customer purchases as well as peripheral sales.

But will the body price drop? We'll have to wait and see :)

Hmm.. I'm surprised that the e-quote was not honoured. Had many good purchasing experiences with them so far, but would be quite disappointed by this incident if it happened to me.

Actually I got both my 40d and 17-55mm 2.8 from MS color via e-qoute and happy how it turns out. But this time around is a different story.

Only if I decided to buy it 1 day early then maybe i should have save 100 dollars.

Anyways I'm happy with my new lens..

Could be due to the Jap Yen is so strong now. Becos the exchange rate difference they increase the price throughout. Im not trying to defend them, but im sure not watching Jap porn already, switching to western ones tomorrow.:bsmilie:

from the thread here.. not v sure y some pple are bashing canon.. complaining abt their biz strategy... nikon has already increased the prices some weeks back..

I think its kinda rare that florence herself will not honor her e-quote...judging from praising posts here by ms color's customers...

I don't think it's rare. I was quoted for 17-55mm f/2.8 and waiting for stock to come in. Then now, quote not honored (and there was constant communication every few days).

Damn angry and I went to buy from other store. Even new quote is higher than others which made me boil... gave me the too bad attitude. I am very loyal if treated fairly, you give me 1 bad experience, you never get my sales again. I have spent more then 5 figure sum there and that's it (not to mention introducing a ton of customers).

Not a single cent more.

I run a business too and relationship is everything. Sometimes, I will take a hit if I feel I own part of the issue and sometimes, giving an inch, you get a mile. You really have to recognize Type A customers (good ones) and keep them.

It is good to know about the current market rate of these equipments, but seriously, no need to feel sour over the up in price lah. If you have the $$ to buy what you want, go ahead. If not, just shoot with what you have loh.

Enjoy the shoot and make the best out of what you have; that will probably make you think harder of how to shoot. We have heard of photogrs with lower end equipments and shot great photos haven't we?

The way I see it; there is nothing we can do about the price increase. But if there are brothers/sisters here who have good lobang to share, that will be very helpful. :)

will B & S increase price by 20% also? :(

will B & S increase price by 20% also?

when the newly bought lenses start selling i think they might.
there will be people selling to gain profit though.
say bought a lens 2 weeks ago. -20%
now up 20% for retail
seller sells for 10% profit.
still cheaper then retail.

No lah, had a similar experience at MSC a few years back.
Maybe their idea of an e-quote is for reference only.
But its ok, I don't live far away from AMK anyway.

yEAH too bad guys:( we just went to John 3:16 yesterday to purchase some stuff. when we ask for the 70-200 f2.8, it was shocking that the price was higher. huhuhu... need to save more....

Why is the japanese yen so strong anyway....? It's ridiculous that it's in its worst recession ever, but yet it's become stronger the yen.

I have the same experience with MS Color when my equote was not honoured. This was despite buying my whole system from them just 2 weeks ago. Which is the best place to buy Canon lenses now as I will not go back to MS Color again?

I may be wrong, but despite the loyal customer base, it appears that some worms are coming out of the woodworks. It might be worth noting ... how some businesses choose to conduct themselves. To me, a quote is a commitment to a price, unless there are terms and conditions attached and stated very clearly, including those covering price hikes and period of validity of the quote. IF and that's a clear 'IF' a business conducts themselves in that way, I will strike them off my list, and also make sure I inform everyone I know who is looking for equipment.

I guess all this boils down to the fact that price increased, and everyone's not happy with it.

I guess MS Color is wrong to give an e-quote without forseeing the price increase, but then again they are afterall running a business and I really don't think they can afford to make a loss of $200-300 at least for each lense for every customer. Then again the debate can go on about how they should at least keep to their promises and retain loyal customers etc. etc.

Bottom line is there was a reason why many of us spent lots at MS before this, and why we call them a reputable shop, but there's a scary tendency that because of the e-quote unhappiness over the last few days that ppl are running them down - perhaps too much more than they really deserve? The vibes I'm getting at least, but I may be wrong.

As for best place to buy canon lense now? No idea, price increase is definitely islandwide unless someone finds one isolated shop somewhere who has loads of older stock paid for.

Actually the e-quote was sent to me at 12:45 AM and I go to the store 5pm same day. The sticker in the box was yellowish so it means that it was already there for some time now.

Just to check, are you very sure the sticker was already yellow?

For me, it's a matter of honor and integrity, not the price hike.

If a commitment is made, and unless there are clear terms and conditions stated contrary to which, that commitment should be honored.
