Just to point out some ugly things at the great event

- Having friends in a queue doesn't mean u can just join them :thumbsd:

I guess that's what the judges see that you didn't, that's why they judge photographers in competitions and you judge photographers in forums.

There is no need to explain or justify for your winning shot. The judge decided on that and that's final.

Hi likepeas...thx for looking tru my flickr...however let me clarify that I've not seen any results frm the other countries other than vietnam before the shoot. Exposure metering and shooting technique are also very much different.

Exposure:
For the malaysian winner the shooter basically need to take an overall meter as the subject and building is the same exposure.I have to meter the background and a separate manual flash setting to expose for the subject.
Angle:
The malaysian shooter just have squat by the side of the subject and click.I have to lie on the ground and have the model jump on top of me, several times as we intend to get the feets and hands in the frame while balancing with the manual setting of the flash to properly expose the subject.Try shooting a canon with nikon flash...sometimes it fires,most times it doesn't

So basically it might look the same but if you shoot alot you know that it's way different.I guess that's what the judges see that you didn't, that's why they judge photographers in competitions and you judge photographers in forums.

everybody's learning, i think there's no right or wrong. Agree with u that the judge's decision is final. :sweatsm:

Im sure the judges won't have that "im almighty, and my judgement is always right" mentality. Sometimes they can learn, why certain decisions arouse certain responses from the majority, what went wrong and right. I believe it's been difficult for the 3 judges, and mentioned by the canon guy, they were debating on what's good and not. :bsmilie:

Likewise from the participant's point of view, we too can learn, what makes photos work and what are those which do not. From the slide presentation, im sure everybody who stayed to watch learnt invaluable lessons, like don't go and shoot what the other 1000 & 1 photographers are shooting, like Mr JC says in the seminar, all the similar shots simply cancel each other out, they become a bore to the general audience. Rather than having the "i can shoot better than anybody else with the same angle" , even if you can make your own shot real good, the others with the same shot will make your shot seem mediocre.
Why not try something different and stand out? Burn a trail, don't be a pretender. :thumbsup:

Nobody's really right or wrong here. I think everybody can question the decisions of the judges (how they base their judgement and criterias). Or a judge could even ask any participant on why he/she would compose a particular shot in that way. It's all fair evaluation, that's how people learn to improve.

Let's not let this thread degenerate into mud slinging, it would be a pity if this got locked. :sweat:

Hey guys.. I would like to bring this up to share with you.
During the first Theme- Passion. most of us was head straight to the People emotional shot.
lots of ppl was gater around Orchard street, hoping to capture some nice Passion shots from the street.. I was just reached at Paragon & wanted to try the Kid playgroud area at Paragon, Just right before I walk in to paragon, I saw couples of us was from wisma to HMV both street..
while I was waiting for my frens to throw his trash at the dusbin, This caucasian lady approached me and tell that It's very Rude to shooting people without permission & she wanted to SUE canon for such events. and she event told me that if anyt one of us has event take photo of her kids, she will file a complain and sue canon. well.. i was not the one shooting at the street and I was been approach for such lousy feedback.

What you guys think?

I felt the same when i saw those cold stares from parents with massive reportage style picture taking of thier kids. At vivo, from a distance, I made an eye contact with a parent, raised my camera with a smile to indicate my intent. He replied with a knod, a smile and a welcome signal from his left hand. I shot from very far and so it wasnt intrusive to their playtime. In the end, I did not feel like submitting those pictures with his kids as I prefer to leave their playtime as a visual pleasure only meant for him.

Here's my share of submitted photos, personally felt i strayed
during my shots selection, chose the ones which did not suit
the themes entirely. Will try harder next year! :bsmilie:

All shots are non-tweaked (except resizing for viewing online,
and in-cam functions edits on the compy day itself)

Candid shots are labelled accordingly and they digitally edited.
(eg. brightness, sharpness, blah, etc)

Too bad for me, i guess. Haaahahaha
But it did give me a buzz seeing the crowd respond. haaa

Attended the photomarathon last Saturday, my first time! Was using a Panasonic Lumix FZ8. I did get slightly when seeing so many folks and teenagers whipping out DSLRs with the super, super, ultra lenses and attachments etc etc.

But when I was in the queue to download my entry photo, I saw a man, in his 60s or maybe even older, standing in front of me and he was just carrying a consumer camera. I thought that old man embodied the spirit of the photomarathon wonderfully. It doesn't matter what camera you're using, from the totally high-end ones or a simple consumer cam, as long as you enjoy yourself

On the whole, I enjoyed myself even though I had to crawl out of bed at 5.30am on a Sat morning. But there was one or two things that disturbed me. Hope no one minds me bringing it out here~~~ It's not my intention to offend!

First thing, I wish people would clear their rubbish and trash during the briefing sessions! It really just irks me when folks don't practise this basic courtesy.

Secondly, this concerns one of the winning photos in the Youth Category. Let me make this VERY clear, I am not being a sore loser (and I'm not even a youth!) or bitter about not winning, but the photo of the woman trying to get on the ox, I found it tasteless and rather insulting. I can see the humour in it, of course, but on the other hand, I thought it was humour at the woman's expense which I dislike. Maybe because I'm a woman so I'm seeing it from a female perspective and not a photographer's POV. But I just felt sorry for that woman in that photo, having her photo taken when she was in a vulnerable position and displayed so openly.

nowadays lots of youngsters are using dslrs
