Canon or Sigma 50mm F1.4?

One more vote for the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 a.k.a "Sigmalux". Stupendous lens for close-up portraits - the bokeh is just stunning! Beats the Canon 50mm f/1.4 hands down in this area. You'll need to test the lens carefully though to ensure its a good sharp copy w/o focusing issues (tho Sigma service center does calibration service for free for warrantied lens)

However, if you can afford to wait out a little longer, there are unconfirmed rumours circulating of a revised Canon 50mm f/1.4 II USM which may be announced in coming months and which is said to resolve the current 50mm f/1.4's main weaknesses. However, as with all rumours, take this info with a pinch of salt.

I have used both and sold the Canon.
Yes, the earlier batch had focusing issues but easily fixed at the Sigma service centre.

Yeah.
Solid build. great bokeh. 77mm filter!..;p
If buy at HK. get International warranty here?

1 year International warranty. I think for Sigma lenses bought locally, it is 30 months warranty.

OOT abit, how long sigma need to fix focusing issue? i am thinking to get 30mm f1.4 but seems tested all copies and all has focusing issue..

Sigma 1.4/50. Having seen the amazing bokeh and IQ.

Thanks for everyone's input. went down to AP and MS, almost the same price. scary la... Canon $560, Sigma $860. OMG... why $300 different. The sigma build is much bigger and heavier, solid feel and look...

I found a local website ddelectronics.com.sg selling at $605 only... Don't know why so much cheaper and i am scare to purchase from him when the price is too good to believe.

Anyone has information about that company?

that should be parallel import, in another word, gery copy :)

warranty should be the shop itself :)

Go for Sigma New Motor and IQ is good

I think this kind of price you can probably get from OP (Sim Lim) as well. Some more you get to test before buying. It is grey set pricing. Any problem, will have to send back to shop and shop will haveto send it back to whichever oversea distributor for rectification. I am not sure if local Sigma will service the lens for a price to avoid all the hassle.

I the shop care to do the servicing then the price and hassle might be worthwhile... Anyone has a PI set and went back for servicing before? anyone has this experience on this issue before?

You need to call them up and fix an appointment with them. You'll have to bring down both the body and the lens together to the service center. It takes approximately 2-3 hours for the calibration, and they will give you a call when its ready for collection.

Sigma lens focusing issues seems to vary with the brand and type of camera used. I've had friends using Sony Alpha (A-mount) DSLRs report that there are no focusing issues at all with their Sigma 50mm f/1.4. Or perhaps they were lucky and got a good copy.

sigma if you have the dough.. i own one myself and it's been awesome! great for portraiture.

color is easier to fix than an unsharp image... ;)

now I;m a bit skeptical about 3rd party lenses after my tamron experience. I feel canon lens' color is nice :P

Or it is just me. haha :bsmilie:. "Weird taste of color" as commented by someone ;(

thank you

the Sigma IMO can be compared to 50MM F1.2.

Major differences to Canon 50mm f1.4 I feel are

Build quality
Bokeh quality (9 rounded blades on sigma vs 8 on the canon)
Sharpness wide open( I get usable results from f1.4 vs soft results from canon(based on test at shop))

But be aware there could be focus shift issues on the Sigma.

Its an inherent problem with some big aperture lenses.
