I'm a newbie learning photography now.
Now very confused as to get a Canon/Nikon SLR/DSLR..
Can someone pls help me..

You will not go wrong with either brand. One question is do you have a current system? If you do have, just get the model with your current system to re-use your accessories.

Another budget alternative you might like to consider, if you have nothing to start off with, is the Olympus E-300 DSLR which is cheaper with higher resolution at a cheaper price.

go to a good camera shop and try out both, go with your gut feel, any one will not make the difference.

i encountered the same problem with u last mth. ha ha... after doing all the survey, asking around all the experts here, visiting lots of websites...... my final decision is.... NIKON DSLR --D70. no regrets .. ... :bsmilie: :bsmilie:
u should choose DSLR as it will shorten ur learning curve...

Get something that you like... Get something that fits you... Get something that works for you...

DON'T get something because other people say so. Remember its your money you are giving away, not ours.... Remember the camera is supposed to fit in your hand, not ours... Remember that both systems have their pros and cons, so don't get swayed too easily...

Anyway, with both systems, you'll get your shots... ;) Besides buying a new camera, spend some more on a good book talking about the basics of photography...

Cheers,
Nick

I would suggest you to join the SEED and borrow someone's DSLR to try try first ..

Both Nikon and Canon makes good cameras...you can't go wrong with either one.
The most imp thing is tat you like the feel of the camera...the grip, the placements of the buttons and etc...
Dun rush into buying one..read more and handle one first before you buy! :)

den i should ask him/her to get a Konica Minolta....

/me Shake it, Shake it....

there're other choices now for DSLR, e.g. Olympus E-300.

just buy all, use them all, and decide one which suits you best. After that, sell the others in B/S forum :D It's as easy as 1..2..3 :D :D

hmmm....

like wad Belle&Sebastian said, go to the shop and try out all the available DSLRs/SLRs around. maximise the opportunity to fully utilise and try out the cameras. im very sure the staff @ cathay will be very happy to assist u lar. ask as much questions as possible about the product u wanna settle for. understand ur equipment....

of course, u must do ur homework first b4 heading down lor. like for example, reading up on a lot on photographic materials/products. so at least u would noe wad u're buying/aiming for.

budget wise. i would advise a 2.5k(DSLR) as an investment to start u off. try not to accessorise too much right now yet. get the basics like UV filter, lightweight bag and even maybe a tripod. additional lenses plus speedlights are things which u wanna consider later period of ur photography pastime... then again, if u wanna chiong at one shop all the  XIONG  stuff at one go, also can lar... but not advisable lar. especially when u're just starting off like me.... must get more exposure to all these things first from the experts ard first mah... :sweatsm:

hope it helps.

Hi WoLoh,

Welcome to this forum. Hope you learn something useful from the posts. Anyway, to get to your question. Like what some of the people have said, it doesn't matter what brand you get so long as you're happy taking pictures. Remember the recent Kodak advertisement? "Pictures! Pictures! Where are my pictures?!"

Here's some of my own experiences in taking pictures, hope it helps...

Before committing hard-earned cash in expensive equipment (after all, the amount of money spent translates into many packets of chicken rice and fishball noodles...) you may consider doing 2 things:

1. Borrow a simple camera from a friend who will be able to lend it to you on a long-term basis. Just go shooting with it. Shoot lots of pictures, literally. One picture is worth a thousand theoretical discussions. Get to know the things/people/animals, etc that you're shooting. Pat yourself on the back when you have a picture that you like. Keep the ones you don't like and think about why the bad ones turn out bad and learn from it.

2. Buy a sketch pad and pencil. Make sketches or drawings of what you intend to photograph. Explore what and how you want to put certain things on the sketch pad. After you're happy with what is on the sketch pad, go try to take a picture that resembles your sketch pad. This was a good way that I learn to see things.

3. When you're ready to get the stuff, look for things that you will actually use. For me, it's the little, trivial things that matters. For example, I prefer cheap and lightweight things that I can stuff into a daypack and run around taking photos with. Big and heavy equipment are good but I found that I was complaining more than I was enjoying taking pictures. I probably got more photos with a cheap and light 2.1 megapixel snap-shot camera than I ever did with a heavy SLR set-up :dunno: plus I had more laughter and fun with family and friends along the way :bsmilie:
In any case, small, light and cheap stuff is better for travel, less conspicious and in the event that I get robbed, I lose less money and get more sleep after that ;p

well, so much for that...

Remember, "Pictures! Pictures! Where are my pictures?!"

Cheers,
Andrew

Actually this is like buying a toyota or honda.....both are good car....one is very advance and as what the 300D called "rebel"ious.......and the other one is more conservative but pride themself in reliability (that doesn't mean honda is not reliable) :D

You should check out Nikon and Canon thread in this forum...see which group of users are more inspiring and make your own judgement....I have made mine and never regret :D

There are many pro and cons of DSLR that u may like to note and make research. Foremost is heavy investment on lenses.

To start off you may even like to consider prosumer as u can go increasingly manual/pro with them. U may be disappointed with the soft pics out of DSLR that need photoshop-ing. Prosumer makes it an option while u focus on understanding the camera.

Taking shots on the LCD allows u to predict/learn the effect of focusing at different areas. etc

After learning the techniques, its the man behind the camera that determines the pic, not the camera.

Dun follow blindly. Everyones mileage differs.

Jus my $0.02

if you truely want to try in the shops please go during a weekday afternoon, monday to thursday are fine. Cathay staff will galdy assist you.

is not which system have lotsa features, performance , reliability that matter. (in the end u wiLL either buried or seLL off)

is how much $$$, and which lense u wanna invest, study/list the lense and ur budget, then u know which system to buy....

have u used film b4? if not, try shooting with film first..
